CEDAR RAPIDS ? Dick Simmons was down in the dumps when he found out the U.S. Cellular Center would not be ready to host the 2013 NCAA Division III wrestling championships.
On Friday, his mood changed.
The NCAA announced the small-college championships would stay in Cedar Rapids ? the fifth time the city has hosted ? but will move the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
?I?m excited to be able to keep it in Cedar Rapids,? said Simmons, a member of the planning committee and associate director of athletics at Cornell, which will host the event March 15-16. ?It?s going to be a little tighter, but we?ll make it work.?
The U.S. Celluar has hosted three Division III tournament in the past and will be home to the 2014 meet, as well. But construction delays at the downtown arena forced the NCAA and the committee to look elsewhere.
On Friday morning, NCAA website listed the 2013 event at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. Simmons said that was one of several sites under consideration.
?We were excited when we got the bid and we were pretty down in the dumps? when they thought they lost it, he said. ?I was thinking I picked a great year to be on the committee.?
The NCAA ?was good to work with.)
Simmons said the mats will take up the entire floor at the ice arena and there is less seating.
?It will be pretty full, which will be cool,? he said. ?We won?t be turning people away.?
