Several pets killed in house fire in Martinez - ContraCostaTimes.com

MARTINEZ -- No one was injured but several family pets were killed Thursday in a fire that destroyed a one-story home in the 2000 block of Franklin Canyon Road, firefighters said.

The fire was reported about 5:15 p.m. and was extinguished in about 90 minutes. The cause is under investigation, but it appears the blaze was accidental and started in the front living quarters of the home, said Contra Costa Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Rich Sonsteng.

Initial reports said children were in the home at the time, but those reports turned out to be false, Sonsteng said. The home's residents, two adults and a child, were not at home; however, several pets, including dogs, cats and birds, were killed.

Efforts to fight the blaze -- which rose to two alarms -- were hampered by a lack of fire hydrants in the area, so officials requested help from the Hercules Fire Department, which brought in water-tanker trucks to dampen the fire.

A damage estimate was not immediately available.
