Police: Caldwell mom who abducted 3 kids now in Mexico

BOISE?-- Caldwell Police and the FBI say three children abducted by their biological mom a week ago have crossed into Mexico.

The mother, 35-year-old Bertha Alicia Guerrero-Lopez, did not have custody of the children and detectives think all four crossed into Mexico as early as Sunday evening, according to a witness who saw them at the border. They were traveling in a grey Pontiac with Nevada license plates.

An Amber Alert went out early Sunday morning after the mother failed to return her children Saturday to their foster mom.

Investigators say Guerrero lost custody of Esmerelda, 5, Mirella, 7, and Ubaldo Guerrero-Lopez, 9, in December after she left them with a woman she'd just met.

On Friday, Guerrero picked her children up for a 24-hour visitation period and never returned them to their foster family.? She has a long history of drug abuse and abandonment.

A Nevada trooper pulled over Guerrero Saturday afternoon for speeding in southern Nevada. He gave her three citations, but the Amber Alert was not issued until the next day, so the trooper didn't know the kids had been abducted and he let her go.

Detectives are still investigating the case and the Amber Alerts in Idaho and Nevada have been canceled.
