Billionaires, shadowy groups fuel pricey election

(AP) ? Billionaires, anonymous donors and shadowy outside groups funneled enormous amounts of money into this year's federal elections, as the cost of the presidential campaign surged past $2 billion and is expected to set a record. Despite grumbling among watchdog groups and even candidates themselves, don't expect serious changes any time soon.

After a series of high-profile federal court rulings, the U.S. government's newly relaxed campaign-finance system allowed for unlimited contributions from corporations, labor groups and others; television advertisements from nonprofit groups that concealed who paid for them and the proliferation of at least 773 super political action committees.

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney experienced both extremes from super PACs: Some attacked him mercilessly during the primary elections and others have supported Romney's campaign by purchasing ads assailing President Barack Obama.

The money race was as important as ever this election. Super PACs supporting Obama and Romney spent more than $500 million in ads, helping Romney especially in battleground states. Nonprofit "social welfare" organizations have spent hundreds of millions more on so-called issue ads, but they are governed by tax laws and don't have to disclose their donors.

Each presidential campaign raised more than $800 million, a staggering sum. Obama had shattered records four years ago when his fundraising apparatus pulled in $750 million. That amount raised by the presidential candidates is dwarfed by amounts being spent collectively on congressional campaigns.

"The general election story here will turn out to be the key role that super PACs have played in contested Senate races and some congressional races," said Trevor Potter, a former chair of the Federal Election Commission and an advocate of campaign-finance reform. "The amount of money is massive."

Proponents of tougher limits on money in politics said they worry about the potential for corruption, but they aren't optimistic about changes to the system. The Disclose Act in Congress, which would have forced campaigns to identify donors who gave more than $10,000, failed in the Senate.

The relaxed spending rules aren't upsetting everyone, including advocates who said unlimited contributions amount to political speech protected by the First Amendment. Some said rules requiring campaigns to identify donors violate a person's right to anonymous speech.

Whatever the case, the new rules have effectively allowed some donors to remain anonymous, such as in the case of a super PAC helping conservative candidates. FreedomWorks for America reported more than $5.2 million in donations during the first half of October ? about 90 percent of the group's fundraising haul ? from an apparent shell company in Knoxville, Tenn.

The money came from a company, Specialty Group Inc., established five days before it made its first contributions; that money has paid for more than $1.5 million in last-minute ad buys. A FreedomWorks spokeswoman declined to say whether its campaign finance report would be amended, saying the group doesn't comment on its donors.

Yet FreedomWorks isn't alone on its spending spree, particularly at the last minute as Election Day approaches. More than $1 billion has been spent this election cycle on independent expenditures from outside groups, and nearly $900 million is spent opposing candidates, according to figures compiled by the nonprofit group Sunlight Foundation.

In Nevada, for instance, those groups have dumped spent more than $5 million on just one House race. Most of that cash has gone toward opposing the Democratic candidate, Nevada state Sen. Steven Horsford. It came in part from Crossroads GPS, the nonprofit arm of the American Crossroads super PAC, which doesn't have to reveal its donors.

At the presidential level, both Obama and Romney have spent considerable time at fundraising events courting wealthy donors. Romney last month lamented the time he spent on fundraising, rather than speaking to larger groups of voters.

Obama and Romney have raised considerable money from small donors, too, especially the president's legion of more than 4 million donors. Still, individual donations of $20 or even $50 are dwarfed by money from Las Vegas casino mogul Sheldon Adelson ? the top super PAC donor this year ? who contributed more than $40 million to Republican super PACs, including those backing Romney and former candidate and House Speaker Newt Gingrich. For Obama, high-profile figures like Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg have donated millions of dollars to super PACs supporting him.

Federal rules require timely disclosure for super PACs, but determining who's behind big donations isn't always easy. In summer 2011, a fledgling company dissolved shortly after making a $1 million contribution to a super PAC supporting Romney. Records showed that the company, established and closed over a four-month period, was formed by Ed Conard, a Romney supporter who once worked with the former Massachusetts governor at the private equity firm Bain Capital.

Microsoft Wedge Touch Mouse

Microsoft is clearly pushing itself to appear more innovative. This is pretty clear with Windows 8, but just as clear with Microsoft's Windows 8 peripherals, like the ultra-portable Wedge Mobile Touch Mouse. It crams all of the touch functionality of the Editors' Choice Microsoft Touch Mouse ($79.95 direct, 4.5 stars) into a tiny mouse with Bluetooth connectivity. The tiny size and extra functionality won't do much for deskbound users or systems running Windows 7, so it's tough to recommend to a broad audience.

Design and Features
The Wedge Touch Mouse is tiny, weighing 2.08 ounces (0.13 pound) and measuring 1.1 by 2.3 by 2.0 inches (HWD)?about the size of a thick stack of Post-it Notes, but with a distinctive wedge profile. As wireless mice go, it's the polar opposite of the HP Wi-Fi Touch Mouse X7000 ($59.99 direct, 3 stars), which boasted Wi-Fi connectivity, but was a whopping six ounces and too big for comfortable use.

The Wedge Mouse takes compact design to a new level, chopping off the entire back half of the traditional mouse, leaving only the right and left buttons. But these aren't your usual mouse buttons, either, as the two clickable buttons are actually part of a single clickable surface, and the entire surface also functions as a touchpad. Your first inclination may be to grab it with the tapered end facing toward you, but that's backwards. The downward slope serves as the two buttons for your mouse. With no palm rest, however, your hand will either rest on the desk or tabletop being used, or held just off the surface, which I can't imagine will do good things ergonomically.

The design isn't simply compact, it's made for portability as well. The small mouse features "Backpack Mode," which senses when the mouse has been lifted from the desk surface and inactive for a while, switching power off automatically. Microsoft's BlueTrack technology, allows the Wedge Mouse to be used on virtually any surface that doesn't have a mirror finish, meaning that you can use it nearly anywhere?on the back of a book, across the leg of your pants, on the arm of a couch. It's nearly as versatile as the Logitech Couch Mouse M515 ($49.99 direct, 4 stars).

Scrolling (both vertical and horizontal) is simple and intuitive, done by simply dragging a finger on the touch surface. Horizontal scrolling becomes all the more important in Windows 8, because the Start Screen stretches out to the sides whether in portrait or landscape orientations.

Setup and Performance
Setup is simple: Insert an AA battery and power on the mouse. Press the Bluetooth Connect button for 3-5 seconds, and then add the mouse using your Control Panel under Add a Device. Within moments, you'll be up and running.

Once you're connected, all of your usual cursor control and left- and right-clicking functions will work without any trouble. The one area you might find troublesome is scrolling, as the mouse uses its touchable surface for both vertical and horizontal movement. While vertical scrolling is pretty simple, horizontal scrolling might take some getting used to, as it means swiping your finger side to side, a move that isn't as ingrained for longtime mouse users. You'll also need to grow accustomed to scrolling without clicking, as the same finger used for clicking is the same one you'll be swiping side to side.

The Wedge Mobile Touch Mouse is easily one of the most portable and versatile mice we've reviewed?it's certainly the smallest?and the addition of four-way scrolling is indispensable for Windows 8 users that may not have a touch screen to work with. However, the super-compact design may be a bit further outside of the box than some users want to go. It's definitely the mouse to grab if you need both portability and Windows 8-friendly four-way scrolling, but for deskbound users and other operating systems, there are better, cheaper mice available. For similar four-way scrolling in a more traditional form-factor, check out the Editors' Choice Microsoft Touch Mouse, which is getting a Windows 8 upgrade.

How Sandy turned into a superstorm

The combination of a winter-time jet stream, warm tropical air and a full moon is turning Sandy into a huge and complicated storm that has the potential to devastate the Northeast and parts of the Mid-Atlantic. TODAY's Matt Lauer reports.

By Alan Boyle

Hurricane Sandy is posing a monster challenge for weather forecasters and emergency agencies, due to an amazing combination of meteorological factors, but what's just as amazing is how well they've been able to predict what seemed to be an unpredictable disaster.

"It looks like we've been fairly consistent on this, even five days out," Chris Landsea, science and operations officer at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, told me today. "I think when all is said and done, on the track forecast, we're going to be quite accurate."

Sandy's path, which took a left turn from the Atlantic to slam head-on into the heavily populated Northeast, is just one of the unusual aspects of this storm. "The size of this system, the late-season nature, and the track?? all these are fairly unique characteristics," Landsea said. To look for precedents, you have to go back to infamous hurricanes such as Agnes in 1972, Hazel in 1954, even the great storms of 1944, 1938, 1815 and?1804. But today, the region is so much more populous and developed that the impact is certain to be far greater.

Here are five factors that have turned Sandy into a superstorm:

Northerly track: Atlantic tropical storms most commonly tear through the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, and lose energy as they pass over the U.S mainland. This storm, however, crept along the Eastern Seaboard, where waters that were warmer than usual for this time of year kept the storm alive. As the storm moved northward, it morphed into a hybrid storm, drawing additional strength from the differential between the storm's warm air and cold northern air from the jet stream.

"There's a transformation that this system is undergoing," Landsea explained. "This is actually evolving into a winter storm, and later, a nor'easter." One result of this evolution is that the storm system has widened to more than 800 miles in diameter, stretching from the Carolinas to Maine and Canada.

NASA / NOAA

NOAA's GOES-13 weather satellite shows the storm system associated with Hurricane Sandy covering the northeastern United States even before landfall on Monday.

The left turn:?Hurricanes that get so far north could drift off into the cold Atlantic to die?? but they can also be pushed into the mainland, as Hurricane Irene was last year. Irene followed a path that was roughly parallel to the coastline, but Sandy took a hard left turn that put it on a course for a direct, perpendicular strike on the coast. That's because a cold front on the mainland is drawing the storm westward, while the current state of a weather pattern known as the North Atlantic Oscillation is blocking the storm from heading eastward.?

Storm surge: Sandy's top sustained winds of 85 miles per hour typically wouldn't rate as a superstorm, but its effects will be magnified, Landsea said. "Even though it's not a 'major' hurricane by any means ... there is substantial threat because of the storm surge and because of the rainfall. There's going to be flooding. Both of those factors are going to be killers," he said. The storm surge is projected to range from 6 to 11 feet. One of the big reasons for such a high surge is that the waters off the coast of New York and New Jersey are so shallow: As the surge from the deeper ocean nears the coastline, all that water piles up to create a higher wave.

Full moon:?Another reason for the huge storm surge is the fact that the moon is hitting its full phase just as Sandy is making landfall. The celestial lineup of the sun, moon and Earth contributes to higher-than-normal high tides.?

Winter storm: Sandy is such a late-season storm that it's running into winter weather in the northeastern United States, which is adding an extra dimension to the misery. "I have not been around long enough to see a hurricane forecast with a snow advisory in it," Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, told NBC's TODAY. The storm could trigger up to 3 feet of snow in the Appalachians, the National Weather Service reported. The Weather Channel's Tom Niziol said that "an amazing combination of factors" have come together to make Sandy a threat due to the snow as well as the rain.

Landsea and other forecasters may marvel at the factors behind what some have called a "perfect storm" or "Frankenstorm," and there'll surely be lots of lessons learned for future weather modeling. But that's not what's uppermost on their mind right now. "What's really important are the impacts," Landsea said.

To keep on top of the storm, and to keep safe, keep an eye on NBC News' hurricane coverage:

Update for 3:10 p.m. ET Oct. 30:?The storm surge was clearly one of the biggest impacts of Hurricane Sandy, and for good reason: The National Hurricane Service reported that in some cases, the surge exceeded its own maximum prediction of 11 feet. At New York's Battery Park, for example, the surge measured 13.7 feet ? and it was devastating. On another note, I've corrected the spelling of Landsea's apt last name since this item was originally published.

Nine colorful and endangered tree-dwelling tarantulas discovered in Brazil

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Arboreal tarantulas are known from a few tropical places in Asia, Africa, South and Central America and the Caribbean. These tarantulas generally have a lighter build, thinner bodies and longer legs, better suited for their habitat. They have increased surface area at the ends of their legs, allowing them to better climb different surfaces, while their light build makes them more agile.

Their core area is the Amazon, from where most of the species are known and normally very common, living in the jungle or even in house's surroundings. Now, nine new species were described from Central and Eastern Brazil, including four of the smallest arboreal species ever recorded.

The study was performed by Dr Rog?rio Bertani, who is a tarantula specialist and a researcher at the Instituto Butantan in Sao Paulo, Brazil. His results have been published in the open access journal ZooKeys.

"Instead of the seven species formerly known in the region, we now have sixteen," said Dr Bertani. "In a resurrected genus with a mysterious single species known from 1841, we have now five species." "These are the smallest arboreal tarantulas in the world, and their analysis suggests the genus to be very old, so they can be considered relicts of a formerly more widely distributed taxon."

Other discoveries include new species of tarantulas living inside bromeliads. "Only a single species had been known to live exclusively inside these plants, and now we have another that specialized in bromeliads as well." A further species was found at the top of table mountains where trees are rare. "This species also inhabits bromeliads, one of the few places for an arboreal tarantula to live that offer water and a retreat against the intense sunlight" he says.

The discovery of all these new species outside the Amazon was unexpected and illustrates how little we know of the fauna surrounding us, even from hot spots of threatened biodiversity like the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado (a kind of savannah vegetation). These species are highly endemic and the regions where they live are suffering high pressure from human activities. Therefore, studies for their conservation are necessaries. Furthermore, all these new species are colorful, which could attract the interest for capturing them for the pet trade, constituting another threat.

Latest Fitness Trends: Body Weight Training ... - Mental Health Hub

130112797Image Source / Getty Images

Think you need a gym to stay in shape? According to the American College of Sports Medicine, one of the leading fitness trends requires nothing more than your own body weight.

In analyzing what?s likely to make up the most popular fitness trends in 2013, ACSM asked 3,346 corporate, clinical, community, commercial and academic health and fitness experts to answer online surveys about what drew people to work out. The participants weighed in on emerging trends as well as whether last years? ?it? programs continued to have appeal. The survey listed 37 potential options and the experts rated the top 20.

This year?s trendiest fitness programs include a mix of fresh ways to sweat it out as well as some stand-bys. Body weight training, a method that uses the body?s own weight as the source of resistance for strength training and muscle endurance, made the list for the first time while previous gym go-tos like spinning and Pilates fell out of favor.

?It?s true that things that are old are new again, and it is really nice to see that,? says Dick Cotton, ACSM?s national director of certification. ?[Older trends] are coming back, and some are coming back and safer.?

Take body weight training, which currently sits at third place behind certified fitness professionals and strength training. The mostly commonly used exercises in body weight training involve push-ups and crunches, which require minimal?if any?equipment. Although some brands have capitalized on its popularity by developing suspension training equipment, like TRX systems, more and more boot camp-style classes are encouraging the use of simple objects like picnic tables and kitchen counters to create adjustable angles for difficult positions. By incorporating every day items like these, fitness experts hope to lower the barriers to exercising.

?We used to have only two variations of a push-up. The standard, straight body push-up as well as what was called ?girls? pushups.?? says Cotton. ?Now, we have an extreme variety of no-cost exercises that work. Look at the heights of different common things out in the world like a table, a chair, the ground, a tree, the kitchen counter. Years ago those were not even considered during training. In fact, the ?girls? push-up? has largely gone away because you can do more effective pushups with less resistance from a table top instead of going from your knees.?

Avoiding the high cost of specialized equipment is definitely a plus, he says, especially in tighter economic times.

Here is the full list of the top 10 fitness trends of 2013 from ACSM:

1. Educated, Certified and Experienced Fitness Professionals: For the sixth consecutive year, the trend of validating fitness experts top the list. ACSM says fully accredited education and certification programs for health and fitness professionals are on the rise. ?The [industry] is getting more professional, more educated and more responsible in providing research-based information,? says Cotton. ?I think there is less gimmicky exercise equipment out there now and fitness professionals are assisting with that.?

2. Strength Training: Strength training holds the number two spot for the second year in a row. Recent research even suggests strength and weight training not only improves fitness, but keeps the mind sharp.

3. Body Weight Training: An easy and economical way to stay in shape.

4. Children and Obesity Related Exercise: ACSM says more schools and fitness industry professionals are emphasizing fitness and nutritional programming aimed at kids. ?Unfortunately fast food restaurants market to kids and we need to do the same?and we are,? says Cotton. ?There are so many advances in technology that are helping kids to be more sedentary. Thirty years ago, all we had were TVs. Now we have tons of really entertaining sedentary activities that are part of the problem.?

5. Exercise and Weight Loss: Being healthy isn?t just about being in shape; it?s about maintaining a healthy weight. Programs are continuing to focus on a balance of eating and exercise to achieve weight loss.

6. Fitness Programs for Older Adults: As the baby boomers age but live longer, doctors are encouraging their patients to stay fit. ?If more older adults exercise, hopefully there will be less health care costs,? says Cotton. ?As you get older, your motivation to exercise changes. You may be less interested in weight loss, but more interested in having energy and sleeping better. I am a baby boomer, and I don?t want to have to call someone to take me to the grocery store.?

7. Personal Training: More communities and corporate businesses are making personal trainers accessible through wellness programs.

8. Functional Fitness: Functional fitness programs are often designed for older adults and incorporate every day activities that use strength training to improve balance and coordination.

9. Core Training: Strengthening core muscles improves the body?s overall stability.

10. Group Personal Training: Trainers can cater regimes to more people through small group classes. These are typically less expensive than the cost for a personal trainer, and are quite fun.

With the holidays approaching, it?s a good time to get familiar with some of the latest fitness trends, and set a resolution to try some in the coming year.

(AP Photo/ Louis Lanzano)

(AP) ? Waves splashed over the sea walls at the southern tip of Manhattan, already at Hurricane Irene levels Monday hours before the worst of a mammoth storm was to hit the nation's largest city with a wall of water that could reach 11 feet.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo closed two key tunnels to downtown Manhattan after the city shut its mass transit system, stock exchanges, schools and Broadway and ordered hundreds of thousands of people to leave their homes ahead of Hurricane Sandy's storm surge. While light rain fell steadily and New Yorkers still bustled on the streets, Cuomo warned residents to get out of the way.

"Don't be fooled, don't look out the window and say, it doesn't look so bad," Cuomo said. "The worst is still coming."

Cuomo said emergency boats were being moved downstate and the Brooklyn Battery and Holland Tunnels, both prone to flooding, would close at 2 p.m. The floor of the New York Stock Exchange was deserted in its first unplanned shutdown since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. More than 20,000 customers, mostly in Long Island, has lost power in the area by Monday morning, utility officials. Most of the city's 3,600 outages were in Brooklyn, officials said.

On Monday, crowds gathered along the South Street Seaport, until police shooed them away. In Battery Park City, a complex of high-rise offices and apartment buildings erected on a landfill in lower Manhattan, holdouts watched as the Hudson rose and began to breach sections of scenic walkways along the river.

Many people were still out jogging, walking their dogs and even taking infants out in strollers amid gusts of wind.

Mark Vial pushed a stroller holding his 2-year-old daughter Maziyar toward the door of a building where they live on 15th floor.

"We're high up enough, so I'm not worried about flooding," he said. "There's plenty of food. We'll be ok."

Vial, 35, said his building had several holdouts. "The laundry room was packed last night," he said.

Some New Yorkers packed grocery stores for water and food and scrambled to get out of flood zones, while others insisted they weren't going anywhere.

Others heeded warnings. Clutching a white pillow in her left hand and two computers in another, Alyssa Marks rushed to get to the subway before it stopped running Sunday evening. She'd gotten cash but had no time to get toiletries and water.

"I'm nervous, but I'm also excited," she said as she left her apartment in a lower Manhattan evacuation zone for a friend's place on higher ground.

Warnings about the superstorm ? a predicted combination of Sandy, a wintry system moving in from the West and cold air streaming down from the Arctic ? took on a much more ominous tone Sunday.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's environmental protection chief, Louis Uccellini, called the projected storm surge "the worst-case scenario" for New York City, Long Island and northern New Jersey.

It threatened to swamp parts of lower Manhattan, flood subway tunnels and knock out the underground network of power, phone and high-speed Internet lines that are the lifeblood of America's financial capital.

The major American stock exchanges closed for the day, the first unplanned shutdown since the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001. The floor of the NYSE, typically bustling with traders on a Monday morning, fell within the city's mandatory evacuation zone. The United Nations canceled all meetings at its New York headquarters. New York called off school for the city's 1.1 million students.

The NYSE's parent company said late Sunday that the shutdown might be extended through Tuesday "pending confirmation," according to exchange operator NYSE Euronext.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Sunday announced a mandatory evacuation affecting 375,000 people in low-lying areas from the beaches of Queens to Battery Park City. Subways and buses were shut down Sunday night, leaving more than 5 million mostly carless daily riders on their own to get to higher ground.

Cuomo deployed National Guard troops to the city and Long Island. Consolidated Edison weighed the possibility of shutting down power in parts of lower Manhattan to protect equipment. Broadway shows were canceled for Sunday and Monday. One small hospital was being evacuated, while several others were moving patients to higher floors.

It marked the second time in 14 months that New York City has faced a scenario forecasters have long feared: a big hurricane hitting the city or a bit south, such that the cyclone's counterclockwise winds drive water into miles of densely populated shoreline.

Hurricane Irene ultimately came ashore as a tropical storm in Coney Island, with a 4-foot storm surge that washed over parts of the southern tip of Manhattan but didn't wreak the havoc that officials had feared, although it caused tremendous damage elsewhere. Some experts have said that a surge 3 feet higher could have caused huge damage.

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Nedbank Group announced on Monday that it is on track for double-digit earnings growth this year, the latest South African bank to benefit from a rise in higher-risk lending.

Hampered by weak corporate demand for credit, the country's big banks have ramped up unsecured lending - the profitable but riskier practice of giving loans that are not backed by collateral.

Unsecured loans in Africa's top economy surged 21 percent in the year to June and now total a $43 billion, the central bank said last week, as Nedbank and its rivals continue to push profitable credit cards and personal loans.

"It's probably the key risk facing South African banks," Johann Scholtz, banking analyst at Afrifocus Securities in Cape Town, said of unsecured lending.

"We've seen this movie before. Everyone is saying, 'No, it's not as problematic as the media is making it out to be.' I still feel that somewhere along the line somebody is going to get burnt."

Unsecured lending has helped South African banks to overcome relatively lacklustre economic growth and book double-digit profit increases.

Investors have noticed. Shares of FirstRand, South Africa's second-largest lender, have climbed 43 percent in the past 12 months. Nedbank, the country's No.4 bank and majority owned by insurer Old Mutual, has jumped 30 percent.

South African banks are now trading at lofty multiples. Nedbank's forward 12-month price-to-book ratio of 1.46 makes it more expensive than Wells Fargo & Co, Goldman Sachs Group and HSBC Holdings.

WOBBLY FINANCES

But the growth may not be sustainable, given the wobbly state of household finances.

Household debt totals 76 percent of disposable income, according to government statistics, while the unemployment rate is stuck at about 25 percent.

One positive for Nedbank has been its focus on writing shorter-term unsecured loans, said Afrifocus's Scholtz. That lowers the risk of bad loans staying on the book for a longer time and allows the bank to react quickly to changes in the market, he said.

Nedbank said in a trading statement that it expects to meet its full-year target for earnings growth - about 13 percent, according to Reuters calculations.

The bank derives its earnings target by adding 5 percent to the sum of the growth in gross domestic product and the consumer prices index.

Net interest income, the measure of earnings from lending, increased 9 percent to 14.5 billion rand in the nine months to September 30, the bank said.

Non-interest revenue, which includes fees and commissions, rose 14 percent to 12.4 billion rand.

Total loans were up by 7 percent, while the ratio of bad debt charges decreased.

Shares in the bank were little changed at 182.40 rand at 1408 GMT.

Sandy and storm surge pose 'worst case scenario'

(AP) ? The projected storm surge from Hurricane Sandy is a "worst case scenario" with devastating waves and tides predicted for the highly populated New York City metro area, government forecasters said Sunday.

The more they observe it, the more the experts worry about the water ? which usually kills and does more damage than winds in hurricanes.

In this case, seas will be amped up by giant waves and full-moon-powered high tides. That will combine with drenching rains, triggering inland flooding as the hurricane merges with a winter storm system that will worsen it and hold it in place for days.

Louis Uccellini, environmental prediction chief for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told The Associated Press that given Sandy's due east-to-west track into New Jersey, that puts the worst of the storm surge just north in New York City, Long Island and northern New Jersey. "Yes, this is the worst case scenario," he said.

In a measurement of pure kinetic energy, NOAA's hurricane research division on Sunday ranked the surge and wave "destruction potential" for Sandy ? just the hurricane, not the hybrid storm it will eventually become ? at 5.8 on a 0 to 6 scale. The damage expected from winds will be far less, experts said. Weather Underground meteorologist Jeff Masters says that surge destruction potential number is a record and it's due to the storm's massive size.

"You have a lot of wind acting over a long distance of water for hundreds of miles" and that piles the storm surge up when it finally comes ashore, Masters said. Even though it doesn't pack much power in maximum wind speed, the tremendous size of Sandy ? more than 1,000 miles across with tropical storm force winds ? adds to the pummelling power when it comes ashore, he said.

The storm surge energy numbers are bigger than the deadly 2005 Hurricane Katrina, but that can be misleading. Katrina's destruction was concentrated in a small area, making it much worse, Masters said. Sandy's storm surge energy is spread over a wider area. Also, Katrina hit a city that is below sea level and had problems with levees.

National Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb said Hurricane Sandy's size means some coastal parts of New York and New Jersey may see water rise from 6 to 11 feet from surge and waves. The rest of the coast north of Virginia can expect 4 to 8 feet of surge.

The full moon Monday will add 2 to 3 inches to the storm surge in New York, Masters said.

"If the forecasts hold true in terms of the amount of rainfall and the amount of coastal flooding, that's going to be what drives up the losses and that's what's going to hurt," said Susan Cutter, director of the hazards and vulnerability research institute at the University of South Carolina.

Cutter said she worries about coastal infrastructure, especially the New York subways, which were shutting down Sunday night.

Klaus Jacob, a Columbia University researcher who has advised the city on coastal risks, said, "We have to prepare to the extent we can, but I'm afraid that from a subway point of view, I think it's beyond sheer preparations. I do not think that there's enough emergency measures that will help prevent the subway from flooding."

Knabb said millions of people may be harmed by inland flooding.

A NOAA map of inland and coastal flood watches covers practically the entire Northeast: all of Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, and Connecticut; most of Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts and Vermont, and parts of northeastern Ohio, eastern Virginia, North Carolina, and western New Hampshire.

Along the mid-Atlantic coast, storm surge is already starting to build, Uccellini said. NOAA's Coastal Services Center chief Margaret Davidson said to expect "bodacious impacts" from both surge and inland flooding.

The surge ? in which water steadily increases from the ocean? will be worst in the areas north of where Sandy comes ashore.

New York will have the most intense storm surge if Sandy comes ashore anywhere in New Jersey, Uccellini said. Only if it arrives farther south, such as Delaware, will New York see a slightly, only slightly, smaller storm surge.

In general, areas to the south and west of landfall will get the heaviest of rains. Some areas of Delaware and the Maryland and Virginia peninsula will see a foot of rain over the several days the storm parks in the East, Uccellini said. The rest of the mid-Atlantic region may see closer to 4 to 8 inches, NOAA forecasts.

The good news about inland flooding is that the rivers and ground aren't as saturated as they were last year when Hurricane Irene struck, causing nearly $16 billion in damage, much of it from inland flooding in places like Vermont, Uccellini and Masters said.

The storm, which threatens roughly 50 million in the eastern third of the country, began as three systems. Two of those ? an Arctic blast from the north and a normal winter storm front with a low-pressure trough? have combined. Hurricane Sandy will meld with those once it comes ashore, creating a hybrid storm with some of the nastier characteristics of a hurricane and a nor'easter, experts have said.

Clearwire moves forward with Huawei in network upgrades after federal consultation

China's Huawei has found itself followed by a cloud of suspicion from governments and national security agencies, both in America, and futher afield. A recent announcement from Clearwire stating it will use the firms hardware in a network upgrade, however, could see some sunshine of confidence finally poking through. Reuters reports that the service provider consulted several technical departments from various federal agencies before making the decision. Clearwire already uses some Huawei equipment in its infrastructure, and it's in these areas that the hardware will be used for upgrades. The firm went on to assure that, overall, less than 5 percent of its LTE budget involves Huawei gear, and irregardless of origin, all vendors are subject to approval from US government approved third parties.

CSN: Embarrassing ending to Union's season

October 27, 2012, 3:52 pm

BOX SCORE

CHESTER , Pa. -- Trying to cash motivation for result points against the rival New York Red Bulls on Saturday afternoon at PPL Park, the Union hoped the spirited season finale would give them all the juice needed to head into the off-season on a high note.

The Red Bulls had different plans.

Led by two first-half goals, Kenny Cooper and the playoff-bound Red Bulls easily squashed the embarrassed Union, 3-0.

?It is not a good result, we know that and we understand that,? said Union midfielder Danny Cruz. ?It?s a catch-22. The season is over and we?re not in the playoffs, but it?s that much closer to 2013.?

Ending a nightmarish 2012 campaign, the loss was a franchise-high 18th of the season for the Union, surpassing their loss total of 15, earned as an expansion team in 2010. The Union also move into the off-season on a three-game losing streak, giving them an overall record of 10-18-6 -- good for eighth in the Eastern Conference.

?Three losses is not what you want, anytime,? said Cruz. ?To be fair, we played three very good teams. We have a young team and though people are probably tired of hearing that, it?s an opportunity for us to grow. This offseason will be extremely important and we?ll do everything we can to be prepared for it.?

Despite holding possession for a majority of the opening 10 minutes, the Union were victimized by good in-zone play by the Red Bulls on the counter. Trying to defend a well-played cross to Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill, Union captain Carlos Valdes got tangled up at the feet with Cahill and called for the penalty.

Capitalizing on the call, Cooper stutter-stepped to the ball before placing the penalty kick to the left of goalie Zac Macmath, giving the Red Bulls the 1-0 advantage in the 13th minute.

?The first goal off a PK, it sunk our spirits a little bit,? said Union defender Amobi Okugo. ?We were trying to play catch-up from then on.?

The Red Bulls doubled their lead in the 35th minute, when Thierry Henry stole the ball from Michael Lahoud in the midfield and tore in on the recovering Union backline. Twisting Valdes around in the middle of the box, Henry easily scored his 15th goal of the season.

?The second goal was an awful deflection,? said Okugo. ?Henry did the rest. We came out strong in the second half but we never got the quick goal we needed. They weathered the storm.?

Union striker Jack McInerney and midfielder Keon Daniel both worked to cut the Red Bulls lead by one, as the first-half time waned. But despite a multitude of chances, the Union were unable to benefit and headed into the half with a mountain to climb.

The Union finished the contest with 15 attempts on goal but only two were on target.

?We couldn?t catch a break and we couldn?t capitalize on our opportunities,? said Hackworth. ?It?s frustrating.?

Despite the Union?s effort to cut their deficit, Cooper scored his second of the game in the 66th minute on a turnover from Union midfielder Brian Carroll. It was his fifth of the season against the Union and made the score, 3-0.

?Kenny and I have a good relationship,? said Hackworth. ?I?m mad at him because he victimizes us every single time. He?s a great player. He does what he needs to do and he?s done it to us a lot.?

Notes

For the second straight match, high-priced Union midfielder Freddy Adu was left off the active roster as a result of coach?s decision. Adu is under contract for one more season with the Union ... Union prospect Zach Pfeffer made his 2012 debut in the 86th minute. The 17-year-old local product replaced Keon Daniel.

Tips To Incorporate Into Your Internet Marketing Strategy | Joe ...

If you?re new to affiliate marketing, these tips will be especially useful to you as you embark in this field. You can get a jump start on your affiliate promotion campaign by taking a look at the following tips.

Positioning your affiliate links on a separate website can lead to an increase in sales of the products or services you offer yourself. You can increase your number of affiliates by making the initiative to show your particular affiliate program clearly. Besides attracting additional customers, a properly optimized site can also attract additional affiliates.

Try writing an ad out on paper, then scan it into the computer as an image file. Upload the image to your website. This personal touch can increase the amount of sales orders you receive because buyers will be able to see that a live person is behind the products. If you have poor penmanship, hire a freelancer to compose the advertisement.

Be honest about your affiliate relationships. Always try to be honest and truthful. If your readers understand why they should use a link then they may follow your links.

Steer clear of pop-under in favor of pop-up ads. Blocking for pop-ups is a common tool in browsers, which means no visibility anyway. Research indicates a higher rate of response for pop-under ads.

Back-links are a great way to attract more visitors, but you should always make sure your back-links describe your content accordingly. If links to your site are referencing Kindles, yet the link refers to an iPod page, your customers become dissatisfied. No matter how smart your strategy is, you should be upfront and honest with your visitor.

You should also find out what you can earn for affiliate referrals. Many established companies will offer higher compensation for referrals. It is possible to get a commission based on these referral sales! If you have a business in a growth market, or perhaps belong to a industry group, you could be in position to refer an affiliate business.

TIP! Make sure that the affiliate company you are considering offers commissions for all the kinds of sales that they offer. Are they able to link orders placed offline to the proper affiliate? You need to be sure you aren?t missing out if there is revenue you should be owed.

Selling popular products can be more successful than trying to find an unoccupied sales niche. Many new affiliate marketers don?t bother with the financial services or supplement markets because the competition level is insane. That said, it is possible to get high conversion rates in a popular niche with the right marketing plan and site design. Popular trends will generate more sales and you will always find a customer. All you need to really get ahead in a popular field is a distinctive marketing campaign to distinguish yourself from the crowd of other sellers.

Do not let your site be overtaken with an excess of banner ads. This will make your site look horrible and drive off potential customers. Make sure that your banners are placed correctly and balanced out with plenty of solid content.

Try asking for a raise if you are generating a good amount of leads. If you are generating enough sales, the marketing program you joined will be eager to keep you.

Keep your affiliate links related to the same theme as your site. An example would be a sports equipment link on a sports related site. To maximize your benefits, affiliate site links should be related to sports. The readers of your website will click your ads if they are related to the content of your site.

TIP! While affiliate marketing can offer the prospect of a lot of money, you must do your research so that you understand how it works. You should constantly strive to increase your website?s search engine ranking.

Keeping tabs on where your links perform well is important in managing your web marketing. Move it around the page and see how it does at the top of an article, in the middle or at the bottom. Change your site so that the only difference is the location of the link inside the content.

You can use internet marketing programs to successfully market your business. Affiliate programs have been shown to attract more web traffic than other forms of advertising, like banner ads or contextual networks. When choosing an affiliate program, bear in mind the payment you receive for referrals, the popularity of the directory and its ease of navigation.

Knowing what is going on in the moment can be a huge advantage. They let you see how many people have come to the site and how many bought something.

TIP! Anything you write as part of your affiliate marketing efforts needs to be worded in positive terms only. Avoid using negative turns of phrases.

Text services can be very helpful in affiliate marketing. Even though text services are still fairly new, many affiliates apply this service in order to ensure their customers stay informed, as well as to advertise new products to customers.

Keep a copy of your most effective emails so you can easily send them out again if you need to attract new customers. Always make e-mails interesting and unique so your contacts remain loyal; if you eventually need to find new customers, you can use your best communications to draw them in.

You must take social media into consideration when you are involved in internet marketing since Google does pay attention to what is going on with it. Search engines crawl social sites, and the data collected factors heavily into search results. Facebook and Twitter often have searchable posts, even though they are not reference web sites.

You must make sure that you and your affiliates do not abuse this function. This is extremely annoying for viewers in the best case. At the worst, it can spread harmful viruses and break affiliate customer chains.

As previously mentioned, you can better promote your services and products through internet marketing. Following these tips leads you on the road to becoming an expert in internet marketing.

Although inside the Forex trading Promote one thing to hope for might be charts and evidence.

Most foreign exchange selections investing is carried out by way of phone as you can find only a number of foreign exchange brokers giving on line fx selection investing platforms.

The act of performing exercises the foreign currency selection and using the subsequent fundamental place while in the foreign currency spot marketplace is called ?assignment? or becoming ?assigned? a spot placement.

As I claimed previously mentioned, the foreign exchange buying and selling is regarded as among the list of most lucrative and desirable options for expense as any particular person can very easily do at your house or place of work and from any element of the planet.

For succeeding the Fx trading, an individual will not be expected to try and do any on-line marketing, marketing and advertising etcetera. The sole need while in the Fx trading may be the account that an individual is needed to open up with trusted and registered brokers, a pc technique and quickly world wide web relationship.

Now, you?ve got to generally be very careful when opening a Currency trading account with any broker for the reason that some may be Fraud. The Commodity Futures Buying and selling Commission (CFTC) in US has jurisdiction more than all Futures and Forex trading exercise. When buying and selling inside the foreign exchange markets, men and women really should only trade using a CFTC registered entity that is definitely also a member with the Nationwide Futures Association (NFA) and is particularly controlled from the CFTC. For non-US broker/ lender entities, make certain the broker or financial institution is registered with that country?s acceptable regulatory bodies.

The solitary most apparent response is needless to say ? over the internet! On the web currency trading offers you immediate entry towards the fx current market and there is plenty and numerous businesses around who will be in business enterprise only to offer with you on the internet.
