Longoria, NYC Mayor Back Candidates in LAUSD Race

Three LAUSD school board positions are up for grabs, and the upcoming vote that could have a significant impact on Southland children?s education and future has attracted national attention.

One of President Barack Obama's closest Hollywood confidants is getting involved. Actress Eva Longoria spent Wednesday afternoon stumping for LA School Board candidate Kate Anderson.

"There are important changes that need to be made, and we should be at the forefront of those changes and of that progress," Longoria said. "So for me going from the national campaign of Obama to local politics, I feel the weight is just as heavy."

Longoria is just the latest high-profile supporter for the first-time candidate.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has donated upwards of $1 million to an independent fund supporting Anderson, who has also garnered the endorsement of education reform advocate Michelle Rhee.

All support charter schools, using standardized tests in helping evaluate teachers, and reforming teacher tenure.

"The way we judge who is in front of my daughters, we judge it based on seniority and we don?t look at teacher effectiveness," said Anderson, who has twin daughters in third grade. "This is the biggest thing we have to change."

Anderson?s opponent, incumbent Steve Zimmer, is backed by United Teachers Los Angeles, the union that has opposed the reform agenda of current superintendent John Deasy.

Zimmer said he is seeking a third way to find areas of change, while involving rank-and-file teachers and the union leadership.

"The way I like to characterize it is I try to build divine coalitions instead of waging holy wars," Zimmer said. "So far in the campaign, the forces that are backing my opponent seem hell bent on a holy war."

Many believe LA's grappling with education reform could have a profound impact on the rest of the nation.

"Los Angeles should be leading the way for education," Longoria said.

White House announces anti-theft trade strategy

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Obama administration announced a broad new effort Wednesday to fight the growing theft of American trade secrets following fresh evidence linking cyberstealing to China's military.

The plan includes a new diplomatic push to discourage intellectual property theft abroad along with better coordination at home to help U.S. companies protect themselves. The administration says indications are that economic espionage is increasing, not only through electronic intrusion over the Internet but also through the recruitment of former employees of U.S. companies with knowledge of inside trade information.

Earlier this week, a Virginia-based cybersecurity firm, Mandiant, accused a secret Chinese military unit in Shanghai of years of cyberattacks against more than 140 U.S. companies. The accusations and supporting evidence increased pressure on the United States to take more action against the Chinese for what experts say has been years of systematic espionage.

For state-backed cyberspies, stealing commercial secrets promises rich payoff

BEIJING (AP) -- For state-backed cyberspies such as a Chinese military unit implicated by a U.S. security firm in a computer crime wave, hacking foreign companies can produce high-value secrets ranging from details on oil fields to advanced manufacturing technology.

"This is really the new era of cybercrime," said Graham Cluley, a British security expert. "We've moved from kids in their bedroom and financially motivated crime to state-sponsored cybercrime, which is interested in stealing secrets and getting military or commercial advantage."

Instead of credit card numbers and other consumer data sought by crime gangs, security experts say cyberspies with resources that suggest they work for governments aim at better-guarded but more valuable information. Companies in fields from petrochemicals to software can cut costs by receiving stolen secrets. An energy company bidding for access to an oil field abroad can save money if spies can tell it what foreign rivals might pay. Suppliers can press customers to pay more if they know details of their finances. For China, advanced technology and other information from the West could help speed the rise of giant state-owned companies seen as national champions.

Yahoo redesign aims to make site more inviting

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Yahoo is renovating the main entry into its website in an effort to get people to visit more frequently and stay longer.

The long-awaited makeover of Yahoo.com's home page is the most notable change to the website since the Internet company hired Marissa Mayer as its CEO seven months ago. The new look debuted Wednesday in the U.S., although it could take a few more days before everyone starts to see it.

It's the first time Yahoo has redesigned the page in four years. In that time, the company has seen its annual revenue drop by about 30 percent from $7.2 billion in 2008 to $5 billion last year as more online advertising flowed to rivals such as Internet search leader Google Inc. and social networking leader Facebook Inc.

Mayer, who spent 13 years helping to build Google into the Internet's most powerful company, has vowed to revive Yahoo Inc.'s revenue growth by establishing more of the company's services as daily habits that "delight and inspire" their users.

Office Depot agrees to buy OfficeMax in stock deal worth about $1.2 billion

NEW YORK (AP) -- Office Depot and OfficeMax are being collated.

The retailers said Wednesday they have agreed to combine in an all-stock deal worth about $1.2 billion that would transform the office-supply retail sector by helping the No. 2 and No. 3 chains compete against industry behemoth Staples.

The merger marks the first move toward consolidation in an industry that is bloated with stores. It reflects the changing retail landscape as "big box" stores have become outmoded and more people shop online. Still, doubts remain whether the combination, which has been mulled over in the industry for years, is enough to offset growing competition and a changing retail landscape.

Greeks going unpaid as jobs vanish, president warns of 'societal explosion'

ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- Looking out across a room full of reporters gathered to welcome French President Francois Hollande on Tuesday, Greece's President Karolos Papoulias gave a stark warning about the state of the country after three harsh years of government spending cuts, joblessness and tax hikes.

"We are faced with a societal explosion if any more pressure is put on society," he said.

In spite of Greece receiving much-needed bailout loans, life seems to be getting worse for ordinary people. Not only are Greece's 1.35 million unemployed unable to make ends meet, but a growing number of those in work are struggling as more and more companies can no longer make regular salary payments. As well finding it harder to feed, heat and clothe themselves and their families, Greek workers also have to pay increasingly hefty taxes the government is relying on to turn the economy around.

US housing starts dip but remain at solid pace

WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. homebuilders began work at a slower pace in January than in December. But the decline occurred in the volatile area of apartment construction, which sank 24 percent. By contrast, the rate of single-family homebuilding rose 0.8 percent.

Even with the overall decline, the pace of home construction in January was the third-highest since 2008 and was evidence of continued strengthening in residential real estate. And in an encouraging sign for the rest of the year, applications for building permits, a signal of future construction, topped December's rate. Applications for permits are at their highest point since mid-2008.

More expensive food pushes up US wholesale prices 0.2 percent after 3 months of declines

WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. wholesale prices rose only slightly in January after three straight declines, the latest sign that inflation is posing no threat. It means the Federal Reserve has room to keep interest rates at record lows without worrying about igniting inflation.

The Labor Department said Wednesday that its producer price index rose 0.2 percent last month, the first increase since September. Gasoline and other energy prices fell, while food prices jumped 0.7 percent after dropping sharply in December.

The index measures the cost of goods before they reach consumers. Wholesale prices are what manufacturers and farmers receive for their products.

Fed minutes show concerns about bond purchases

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Several Federal Reserve policymakers suggested last month that the Fed might have to scale back its efforts to keep borrowing costs low for the foreseeable future.

Minutes of the Fed's Jan. 29-30 policy meeting released Wednesday showed that some officials worried about the Fed's plan to keep buying $85 billion in bonds each month until the job market has improved substantially. They expressed concern that the continued purchases could eventually escalate inflation, unsettle financial markets or cause the Fed to absorb losses once it begins selling its investments.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Boeing has developed a plan that it intends to propose to federal regulators to temporarily fix problems with the 787 Dreamliner's batteries that have kept the planes on the ground for more than a month, a congressional official told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Ray Conner is expected to present the plan to Michael Huerta, head of the Federal Aviation Administration, in a meeting on Friday, the official said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly.

Macy's, Penney spar in court over rights to sell Martha Stewart products

NEW YORK (AP) -- Let the pots and pans fly. Two of the nation's biggest department stores ? J.C. Penney and Macy's ?began to duke it out in New York State Supreme Court over the right to sell Martha Stewart merchandise.

At the heart of the trial, which got under way Wednesday, is whether Macy's has the exclusive right to sell Martha Stewart-branded products in such categories as cookware, bedding, and bath. Company founder Martha Stewart, J.C. Penney's CEO Ron Johnson and Macy's CEO Terry J. Lundgren could be called to testify during the trial, which could last three weeks.

In December 2011, J.C. Penney announced a partnership in which it would open Martha Stewart mini shops in most of its stores, beginning this spring. Macy's sued Martha Stewart Living almost immediately, saying that it had exclusive rights on certain of its products until 2018. The pact goes back to 2007.

Girl, 4, pulls little sister from car wreck that killed mom

A 4-year-old child managed to get herself and her 2-year-old sister out of a car after a crash killed their mother. A passersby found the young children stranded with their mother's dead body hours later. KING's Natalie Swaby reports from Washington.

By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News

A 4-year-old girl in Washington state pulled her little sister from the wreckage of a car crash that killed their mother, then kept the two of them warm under a blanket in the chilly rain for six hours until a passing driver found them.

State troopers said that the girls probably only survived because the older sister had the wherewithal to get them out of the car and cover them. The younger girl is 2. Both were hurt, NBC affiliate KING5 in Seattle reported.

The crash happened at about 2 a.m. Wednesday in a remote part of the state near the Pacific coast. It was after 8 when a driver noticed a fresh cut in the bark of a tree along the road ? an orange gash in otherwise green and gray woods.

?I just can?t imagine what the little girls were going through,? the driver, Kraai McClure, told KING5. ?It could have been a really different ending, but it is, you know, a halfway happy ending.?

The mother, 26, was on her way to pick up her husband, a fisherman, along the Washington coast, The Seattle Times reported. He told her on the phone that his boat would be coming into Portland, Ore., instead, and that she and the girls should head home, KING5 reported.

The woman, identified by troopers as Jessica Rath, apparently decided to drive to Portland anyway. Troopers said she probably fell asleep at the wheel and was killed instantly when the vehicle crashed.

?We?re lucky we had someone paying attention or we may not have found them for a long time,? Trooper Russ Winger, a spokesman for the Washington State Patrol, told The Times. ?Hypothermia could have set in if they were found any later.?

Both girls were taken to a hospital in Astoria, Ore., and the 2-year-old, who troopers said was seriously injured, was later flown to Portland.

A woman died in a car crash near Naselle, Wash., early Wednesday, but her two daughters survived the accident.

At least four dead in California shootings

Los Angeles, Feb 19, 2013, (AFP) :

A string of shootings after an apparent carjacking in southern California today left at least four people dead, including the suspected gunmen, police said.

Two others were injured before the suspected gunman shot and killed himself, after officers found him in a stolen vehicle and pursued him into the city of Orange, California.

"At this stage we do have four dead including the gunman," Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino told KTLA 5 television, adding that the suspected gunman was a man in his 20s.

He said there were shootings at six locations, starting at around 5:20 am (local time). At least three of the shootings occurred near the nearby 5 and 55 freeways.

Five people were shot in Tustin, about 35 miles southeast of Los Angeles, and two others were shot in nearby areas, said Tustin police department spokesman Paul Garaven.
"There are multiple (crime) scenes throughout Tustin and the surrounding areas," Garven said.

HTC One imaging in depth: UltraPixel camera and Zoe Share

HTC One imaging in depth UltraPixel camera and Zoe Share

Saying that the HTC One has piqued our interest is an understatement. The handset, which was announced today in London and New York, combines ultra-refined design with a uniquely tweaked Android experience, something we've covered in our hardware and software posts. Still, it's the UltraPixel camera that's raising the most eyebrows. We briefly played with the shooter and witnessed the new Zoe functionality first hand. It's clear that HTC is making a bold move with the imaging technology used on this phone, but what does it really mean in terms of specs and performance? Let's dive into the nitty gritty after the break.

HTC picked the word UltraPixel to brand its latest camera, just like Nokia coined the term PureView for its devices last year. The idea behind UltraPixels is to combine a physically large sensor with big pixels capable of gathering more light. With the HTC One, the company chose a 1/3-inch BSI sensor with 2µm pixels which absorb 330 percent more photons than the 1.1µm pixels typically found in modern handsets. This is combined with a fast 28mm f/2.0 autofocus lens similar to what's available on the One X, but slightly recessed for protection. Better yet, this shooter features optical image stabilization (OIS) just like the Lumia 920 -- it's able to compensate for motion in 2 axes (pitch and yaw) up to 2,000 times per second. With big 2µm pixels (that's Fujifilm X10 territory), a fast f/2.0 lens (vs. f/2.4 on the iPhone 5 and f/2.6 on the Galaxy S III) and OIS, the HTC One is poised to excel at low-light photography. A single LED flash is provided for those extremely dark circumstances.

We're pretty sure you've noticed the giant elephant in the room by now -- the lack of any mention of pixel count. That large sensor packs just four megapixels (!) and while anyone who knows digital photography understands that's plenty, it's still a daring move in a market driven by the megapixel myth. We'll take four million 2µm pixels over eight million 1.1µm pixels any day, but we think it's going be an uphill battle for HTC to educate the average consumer. The HTC One packs a new image signal processor (ISP) called ImageChip 2, which enables continuous autofocus in less than 200ms, and provides real-time lens compensation plus noise reduction. It also supports 1080p HDR video recording at near 30fps and 720p at 60fps with a dynamic range of about 84dB. The ISP implements a buffered capture cycle with pre- and post-shutter recording, for functionality similar to Scalado's Rewind / Remove, Nokia's Smart Shot, Samsung's Best Face and BlackBerry's Time Shift.

All this camera technology culminates with one particularly cool feature: Zoe. Named after the Greek word "life" and hinting at old zoetropes, this feature captures a 3-second 1080p 30fps H.264 video clip along with a 16:9 2688x1520 JPEG picture each time the shutter button is pressed. In burst mode, the HTC One is capable of taking 4-5 full-size stills per second while recording 1080p video. The resulting 3-second clips become animated thumbnails for your photos in the gallery. When you're ready to share your memories, smart content editing, cutting and sequencing software is used to create and upload a Zoe -- a professional-like highlight reel with images, clips, effects and music that remixes your content on the fly, complete with theme and music track synchronization. There are six themes and six music tracks to choose from, and you're given the option to deselect photos or videos. Once uploaded, the result can be shared via Zoe Share, which generates a standard URL that's valid for 30 days -- think of it as Vine on steroids, but less permanent.

In addition the the main shooter, the HTC One comes equipped with a 2.1 megapixel front-facing module with f/2.0 wide-angle (88-degree) optics that supports 1080p video capture. Dual HDR microphones provide distortion-free stereo audio recording in a wide variety of conditions, including loud venues. Unfortunately, our time with the UltraPixel camera was too short to formulate a solid opinion, but based on our experience so far, HTC's latest shooter is poised to delight both shutterbugs and casual users alike. On thing's for sure: we can't wait to take the company's latest imaging flagship for a spin.

UK Newsx.com ? There is Financial Freedom Through an E-Book ...

Financial freedom can only be recognized with hard work, innovation, and a popular ? but reliable ? product or service. But with an Internet business, these three often get clouded with having almost too many opportunities. You can easily get discouraged when researching the overwhelming number of business venues that are available online. But with e-books, many small business owners are discovering financial freedom while offering long-lasting products of value.

E-books are electronic books that might contain graphics, photos, sound, and content relating to any subject. They can also contain links to various web pages for promotions or illustrations. It?s very inexpensive to create an e-book, but yet people enjoy reading them every day. E-books are popular online because they are usually inexpensive or free and offer advice and tips on a variety of subjects. The subjects can be anything from ?how to earn money online? to ?how to start a home business.? E-books may also cover more specific subjects such as ?how to make money with a crafts business? or ?cross-stitching tips for the beginner.? The possibilities for e-book subjects are unlimited.

E-book Home Business Facts

Starting an e-book business means you are offering e-books for sale online to a specific target audience. You might sell only one or a few e-books, or you might even sell hundreds of them. The choice is yours, but of course, the more e-books you offer, the more chances you?ll have to earn a lucrative income.

Here?s how it works. You?ll promote your e-books using various techniques such as an e-mail newsletter (e-zine), search engine promotions, paid ads, and other methods. Customers will visit your website to read your presentation. When they purchase one of your e-books, they will download it directly from your website or from an e-mail. You can even automate the entire process to make things easier on you and the customer.

The reason e-books are so successful for gaining financial freedom is because once they?re created, you don?t have to do anything except promote them. You can create an automated cash system that works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. E-books can be sold and downloaded by your customers while you sleep!

Resell E-books to Earn Money

If you don?t want to write your own e-books, you can also create a cash system and enjoy financial freedom by reselling e-books that others have written. With this type of home business, you will purchase rights to various e-books, sometimes hundreds of them, and resell them as your own products. Keep in mind that other companies will likely be selling these titles as well. But the Internet is so big, there?s plenty of room for everyone!

Some companies provide business opportunities in which you?ll receive a number of benefits along with hundreds of e-books to resell. These opportunities may cost a little up front, but are definitely worth the investment for starting your own home business. The e-book products alone can generate a very healthy cash system for years to come.

As with any home business, selling e-books will take some time to build and promote. But once the ball?s rolling, you?ll enjoy financial freedom and success like never before!

Pathway controlling cell growth revealed

Feb. 18, 2013 ? A Melbourne-based research team has discovered a genetic defect that can halt cell growth and force cells into a death-evading survival state.

The finding has revealed an important mechanism controlling the growth of rapidly-dividing cells that may ultimately lead to the development of new treatments for diseases including cancer.

The discovery was made by Associate Professor Joan Heath, Dr Yeliz Boglev and colleagues at the Melbourne-Parkville Branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. Dr Kate Hannan, Associate Professor Rick Pearson and Associate Professor Ross Hannon at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, also contributed to the work, which was published in the journal PLOS Genetics this month.

Associate Professor Heath, a Ludwig Institute Member who recently transferred her research group to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, said the discovery was made while studying zebrafish embryos that harbour genetic mutations which prevent rapid cell growth during organ development. "Zebrafish embryos provide us with a great laboratory model for these studies because they are transparent, an attribute that allows us to track the growth of rapidly developing organs in live animals under a simple microscope. Moreover, the genes controlling growth and proliferation of developing tissues are essentially identical in zebrafish and humans, and are known to be frequently commandeered by cancer cells."

"We discovered that a mutation in a relatively under-studied gene called pwp2h leads to the faulty assembly of ribosomes, the 'protein factories' of cells, and stops cells from dividing," she said. "What was intriguing was that cells under stress from ribosome failure did not die. Instead, the cells switched on a survival mechanism called autophagy and began obtaining nutrients by digesting their own intracellular components."

Ribosomes are large molecular machines in cells that manufacture proteins, and are critical for cell growth and division. Currently, there is great interest in developing therapeutics to block ribosome production, as a strategy to prevent cancer cells from dividing.

"Our research could have implications for this type of cancer treatment," Associate Professor Heath said. "We showed that when ribosome assembly is disrupted, cells stop growing as desired, but to our surprise they enter a survival state. An anti-cancer treatment that inadvertently promotes the survival of cancer cells through autophagy is clearly not desirable. However, our findings in zebrafish show that if ribosome assembly is blocked and, at the same time, autophagy is inhibited, cells die rapidly. It is possible that a combination of inhibitors that block ribosome function and autophagy could provide an effective anti-cancer treatment," she said.

Associate Professor Heath's group is continuing its research at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, examining other genetic mutations in zebrafish that disrupt cell growth and division. "We are keen to enhance our approach by applying existing research technologies at the institute," she said. "We have identified a number of cellular processes that rapidly dividing cells -- including cancer cells -- depend on, and the next stage is to test whether they could provide new targets for anti-cancer therapy."

The research was supported by the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Victorian Government.

UPDATE 2-Pistorius, slain girlfriend had planned future - uncle

(Adds New York Times report, police no comment)

JOHANNESBURG, Feb 16 (Reuters) - South African Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius, known as the "Blade Runner", was planning a future with the girlfriend he is accused of shooting dead this week, his uncle said on Saturday.

Pistorius, 26, one of the world's most recognisable athletes, was charged on Friday with murdering swimsuit model and law graduate Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of the previous day.

He broke down during a 40-minute bail hearing at a Pretoria court but was not asked to enter a plea.

"They had plans together and Oscar was happier in his private life than he had been for a long time," Anthony Pistorius said in a statement released by his nephew's agent.

"We are in a state of total shock - firstly about the tragic death of Reeva who we had all got to know well and care for deeply over the last few months," he said. "All of us saw at first hand how close she had become to Oscar during that time and how happy they were."

The suggestion that Pistorius' family was close to Steenkamp runs counter to comments from Pistorius' father, Henke, who told the New York Times he had never met his son's partner.

"I don't discuss my son's relationships. I have, in fact, not met the lady," he was quoted as saying.

Prosecutors alleged the shooting was premeditated, a charge that could put Pistorius behind bars for life if convicted.

Police have said there are no other suspects and the pair were the only people in the house at the time. Initial reports suggested he may have mistaken her for an intruder.

Anthony Pistorius reiterated the family's belief that the track star - a double amputee who became one of the biggest names in world athletics when he ran at last year's Olympics - had not shot Steenkamp deliberately.

"After consulting with legal representatives we deeply regret the allegation of premeditated murder," Anthony said.

"We have no doubt there is no substance to the allegation and that the state's own case, including its own forensic evidence, strongly refutes any possibility of a premeditated murder or indeed any murder at all."

NUMB

Pistorius is being held in a Pretoria police station before the resumption of his bail hearing on Tuesday. He is "numb" with shock and grief, the statement said.

Several South African media reports have said Steenkamp was shot through the bathroom door and was hit four times - in the head, hip, arm and hand.

Police said on Thursday witnesses had heard disturbances at the home before the shots, adding that there had been previous incidents of a "domestic nature" at the home.

The shooting has shocked South Africa, where Pistorius was revered as a hero whose achievements transcended the racial divides that linger in Nelson Mandela's "Rainbow Nation" 19 years after the end of apartheid.

The disbelief was felt across the globe among the millions who saw in Pistorius the ultimate tale of triumph over adversity - a man who rose to the highest pinnacles of athletics despite having no lower legs.

He was born without either fibula but reached the semi-final of the 400-metres in the London 2012 Olympics, running on high-technology carbon fibre prosthetic 'blades'. He also won two Paralympic gold medals and one silver medal.

Although the public image was of a charming and easy-going young man, a Twitter posting by Pistorius in November paints the picture of a would-be action man obsessed with security.

"Nothing like getting home to hear the washing machine on and thinking its an intruder to go into full combat recon mode into the pantry! waa," read the Tweet on the morning of Nov. 27

Police recovered a 9mm pistol from his home after the shooting. The Afrikaans-language Beeld newspaper said Pistorius had a licence for one firearm and applications pending for a further seven, including a semi-automatic rifle.

Police declined to comment on the Beeld report.

"We're releasing nothing," spokeswoman Katelgo Mogale said. "Details of the incident will come out in court."

South African state broadcaster SABC will on Saturday evening air the first episode of a tropical island reality show featuring Steenkamp that was filmed last year in the Caribbean.

SABC said her family had given their blessing to the show's airing, which will be preceded by a short tribute. (Reporting by Ed Cropley; Editing by Angus MacSwan and Jason Webb)

Bahrain police, youths clash after funeral

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - Police firing tear gas clashed with hundreds of stone-throwing youths in Bahrain on Saturday in heightened unrest that could complicate new efforts to end political deadlock in the strategically placed Gulf Arab kingdom.

The violence has clouded the atmosphere around talks begun on February 10 between the mostly Shi'ite Muslim opposition and the Sunni Muslim-dominated government to find a way out of the impasse over Shi'ite demands for more democracy.

Witnesses said the confrontation, in which some of the hundreds of opposition demonstrators also threw petrol bombs at police, followed the funeral of a teenager the opposition said was killed in clashes between police and activists on Friday.

The disturbance in the village of Sanabis west of the capital Manama was the latest in a series of skirmishes between Shi'ite youths and police since Friday, when opposition activists commemorated the second anniversary of a pro-democracy revolt in the U.S.-allied state.

The kingdom, base for the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet, has been in political turmoil since the protests erupted in 2011, led by majority Shi'ites demanding an end to the monarchy's political domination and full powers for parliament.

Thirty-five people died during the unrest and two months of martial law that followed, the government said, although the opposition puts that number at more than 80. The government has accused opposition groups of being linked to Shi'ite power Iran.

BIRDSHOT

Bahrain remains volatile, and its Shi'ite villages are the scene of almost daily clashes between youths and police.

The next round of talks is meant to happen on Sunday. There was no immediate word from either government or opposition as to whether the discussions would go ahead.

Earlier on Saturday police found a bomb planted on a busy causeway linking the Gulf island to Saudi Arabia, and four officers were shot and wounded in a village, officials said.

The 2-kg bomb, discovered on Thursday near a mosque on the Bahraini end of the route used by thousands of people a day, was safely defused, according to the Information Authority.

Late on Friday, four officers were hit by birdshot pellets in the Shi'ite village of Karzakan, the authority added, quoting public security chief Major-General Tariq Hassan al-Hassan.

Bahrain denies accusations of discrimination against Shi'ite citizens and accuses Iran of stirring up trouble in the kingdom, something the Islamic Republic denies.

Expect Hamill, Fisher And Ford In Star Wars Episode VII - But As Parents? The Kids Are The Stars?

I'm fully confident that Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford will all appear, to some greater or less extent, in the next episode of the Star Wars saga.

We know that George Lucas spoke to Hamill and Fisher before the Lucasfilm-Disney deal became public and Ford has apparently now signed on the dotted line to reprise the role of Solo in the next movie at least.

But Roger Friedman at Showbiz 411 seems a little perplexed at to why the Ford deal has been such big news right now, and why some people seem to be doubting it:

I just got back and saw a story running wild about Harrison Ford playing Han Solo in the new Star Wars revival. No one seems sure about it. I was told some time ago that Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill would be reprising their roles...the three main actors are definitely coming back.

But it's perhaps the other half of Friedman's commentary that's the most interesting:

It?s some time in the future. Han, Princess Leia (with a presumably better hairstyle), and Luke Skywalker will be a lot older. Their children will be the new main characters... the bigger question is, which young actors will play their kids?

Does Friedman actually have information specifically to this effect? He's been super-sharp and on the money when it comes to matters of Adele or Barbra Streisand, but they're not creatures from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. I really don't think he's pulling our legs, though I do wonder what his source is.

Rumour has it that Matthew Vaughn would have cast Chloe Moretz as the movie's lead if he'd been handed the reins of Episode VII. This seems to back up Friedman's story, at least a little.

Cutting against it, perhaps, are some recent comments by Lawrence Kasdan, the Empire Stikes Backalum who's working on both the new main-saga Episodes and the spin-off films. He told The LA Times:

I?m trying to start fresh. There are certain pleasures that we think the saga can bring to people that they?ve been missing, and we?re hoping to bring them that, and at the same time, have them feel that it?s all new.

There are already several "extended universe" stories that feature the kids of Luke, Leia and Han. I'm not somebody who has dabbled with that stuff much but I'm aware of Jaina and Jacen Solo and Ben Skywalker. I think the series has gone so far that these kids also have kids of their own.

Will these established characters actually be in the films? Well, I'm hoping that JJ Abrams, Michael Arndt and the rest of the team just wipe the board clean and start all over again. There's a shape to the first six films, for all of their failings, and I think it needs to be extended into the next three chapters in order keep the whole thing feeling organically interlinked - and that is the point, isn't it? That's what the episode numbering is for?*

There was something a bit soapy, and not quite "on tone" with the little scraps of spin-off books that I read. I'm sure that many of them are fine works in their own right, but part of their potential and appeal was in going off to uncharted areas, even twisting the genre about, away from the "romantic fantasy" of the original movies.

These sorts of feelings and associations might work very well for the upcoming spin-off movies, but for the main saga? Probably not the best idea - and I think the worst bits of Episodes I to III actually pay testament to this.

One final thought: if somebody hasn't already pinned a picture of Jennifer Lawrence onto the crazy, cop-movie looking tactics and planning corkboard in the Lucasfilm war room, then I'll eat my danish bun hair do.

*I spoke about this on the podcast a few weeks ago. I think there are some elements of Episodes I to VI that really should be carried over to VII to IX, no matter how tricky it might be to work them in.
