Writer's block.
Oh. My. Gawd.
You open the word editor, place your fingers on the keyboard, and suddenly the despair sinks in. You can't visualize the story. You can't formulate the right words. There's this thick wad of ephemeral nothingness just sitting there, preventing the flow of words that you know so well and love so much from reaching the page. You wait for a while, hoping for something to come--anything--a piece of dialogue--anything--but the wad of nothingness just seems to grow thicker, forcing you out of your own mind. Gah! You throw up your hands in the air. Writer's block strikes again!
The wad of nothingness stays there for hours on end. Sometimes it lets up and you can crank out a sentence or two, but the words seem foreign, strange, lost in translation. You try to come up with something better, but everything sucks. All those years of practice and the best you could come up with was "he smiled happily at her happy smile"!?
You walk around the house, thinking over the story, fueling your muse. Finally you can see it: the dragon, swooping down from the tower, mouth wide, tongue ensnared with wicked embers. But you can't see the sentences. You can visualize it, but the vocabulary to accompany the actions is missing. You decide to try your hand at writing it anyway.
"Teh dragon flew to the ground, opened it mouth, breathed fire and burned all the soldiers. They dropped dramatically to the ground and died. the dragon spread its wings victoriously, the end."
You feel like you wrote something. You're staring at the period; you know you just wrote something. But why are you so afraid to look at it? What the heck did you just write!? Look at it!
GAH! IT BURNS!
You delete, you retype, you delete, you retype--but dangit, there is no hope; you've digressed down the evolutionary ladder and wound up somewhere on the lower rungs.
You bang your Neanderthalian skull against the metaphorical wall, trying fruitlessly to break the block. You do this for days. You do this for weeks. You do this for months, or even years. All you end up with is a brain tumor.
You browse the web, searching for help. You find sites for helping you write better prose, articles with some ideas for writer's block, forums, books, scrolls, grimoires, tomes--but none of them help.
This wad of nothingness is impenetrable. When it appears, all hope is lost. Fighting it is fruitless.
You cannot. Beat. Writer's block. This is the one realization I've come to...realize, and it's helped me tremendously. Don't fight writer's block, because you can't beat it. The only thing you can do is get through it.

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? Ian Poulter came through again, teaming with Justin Rose for a 1-up victory over Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson and giving Europe a point it desperately needed Saturday at the Ryder Cup.
The Americans lead 6-4, but are up by multiple holes in the remaining two foursomes.
Led by Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson, who are 3-0 after a 7-and-6 thrashing of Lee Westwood and Luke Donald earlier Saturday, the Americans have been overwhelming.
Europe has had few answers, and captain Jose Maria Olazabal turned to Poulter and Rose to try and stem the momentum. Poulter holds the European record for winning percentage at 10-3-0, and he didn't disappoint Olazabal.
They played just well enough to hold off the Americans, closing out the match when Simpson missed an 8-footer.

TEHRAN: Israel has already breached its own red line set by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by acquiring "dozens of nuclear warheads," Iranian Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi said on Saturday.
"If having the atomic bomb is passing the red line, the Zionist regime, that possesses dozens of nuclear warheads and weapons of mass destruction, has passed the red line years ago, and it has to be stopped," he said, according to the ISNA news agency.
Vahidi was responding to a speech by Netanyahu to the UN General Assembly this week in which -- using a cartoon bomb diagramme -- the Israeli leader called for a "clear red line" to be applied to Iran's nuclear activities, which he charged are aimed at developing atomic weapons.
"Is the occupying and aggressor Zionist regime that possesses nuclear weapons more dangerous? Or an Iran that doesn't have nuclear weapons and which insists more than anybody on nuclear disarmament, and seeks only to have peaceful nuclear energy abiding by international rules," Vahidi asked.
Israel is the Middle East's sole, though undeclared, nuclear weapons state. Analysts estimate it has more than 200 nuclear warheads.
It is a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency but has never signed the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Iran insists its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful and rejects Israel's accusations of military intent.
Israel has had serious differences with Washington over how to respond to what it regards an "existential" threat from Tehran.
US intelligence agencies estimate that Iran has taken no decision to acquire a nuclear weapon but is merely seeking a so-called breakout capability to develop one in the future if it so decides.
It says there is more time for diplomacy and sanctions to work out.

Oh the pleasures of a weekend BBQ!
Even better when it's paired with a lazy staycation where all you have to do is chill out, relax and let everyone else do the work. During our stay at the Park Hotel Clarke Quay, we had a nice poolside BBQ dinner at Cocobolo Bar + Grill. This is a bit of a hidden find for me, because I hadn't heard much of Cocobolo previously. But it was a pleasant discovery, because the food's not bad at all and I'm already thinking of going back.
Cocobolo is small but cosy, with wooden deck flooring that sets a resort-like mood. The bar serves cocktails and drinks, and the whole place overlooks the outdoor pool with cabanas.
But our eyes are on the BBQ bounty! You can pick and choose what you want, and then see them transformed into grilled goodies!
Several staff led by Chef Wilson Shum are on hand to help you grill the items to your preferred doneness. See? You don't have to do any work!
Zucchini, squash, eggplant and pineapples caramelising on the grill. The pineapples are really good, just like at a churrascaria, to help you cut into all the meat later. I did wish the eggplant slices were a bit thinner though.
Jolie was very amused by the free-standing table lamps that kept changing colour. Meanwhile, we enjoy the breezy outdoors and the aromatic sizzle that fills the air as we await our food.
We kicked off with a platter of sausages and bratwurst. The cheese sausages (left) are guaranteed to be a hit with kids, that is, if the adults don't polish them off first! I also liked the veal and other pork sausages.
There's plenty of salad for you to start with as the chefs grill your food.
There are cooked vegetables too. Broccoli and cauliflower topped with grilled cheese.
But let's jump right into the barbecued items, especially the good stuff!
Lamb Rack French Cut (Marinated with Garlic Herbs, Oil and Spices)
This is their signature item, and deservedly so. Tender and grilled just right, these lamb racks are incredibly well-seasoned with herbs, spices and garlic. This alone is almost worth the price of admission.
BBQ Baby Pork Back Ribs
This is also very good. I could eat lots of this. Ah, my mouth is watering at the memory of the lamb racks, and these sweet, juicy, tender ribs...next time I'm not sharing.
Grilled squid and prawns
The seasoning for the squid is really good, but squid is hard to grill right - so some might turn out a bit too tough. Darn, I forgot to try the prawns. I also didn't try the grilled chicken in the first photo, though it looked really good. Too busy taking photos! *self-kick*
Sambal belachan fish fillet in banana leaf
Again, the seasoning is nice and spicy, but the the grill may have been a little too hot for the fish, and it may have spent time still steaming in the foil-wrapped parcel after it's been taken off the grill. The flesh was just a tad overcooked.
Beef striploin
By this juncture, we were really full, but I just had to try what the beef steaks were like. Not bad, good seasoning as usual, but a little lean. I also should have asked for a level of doneness lower than what I am used to.
Various mini desserts, cakes and pastries - to put back what you spent on the swim earlier in the day. The jellies are good fun, and refreshing after all the grilled meats.
And just when we thought we'd reached the end, they bring out the ice cream! Mini cones! So delightful! You can't say no to these.
The hotel pool is really nice at night too.

NEW YORK (AP) ? As consumers we want our electronic gadgets to be durable. But as patients, we might want them to dissolve ? inside our bodies.
Scientists reported Thursday that they succeeded in creating tiny medical devices sealed in silk cocoons that did the work they were designed for, then dissolved in the bodies of lab mice. It's an early step in a technology that may hold promise, not only for medicine, but also for disposal of electronic waste.
The new work is "a remarkable achievement" in combining materials to produce a working device, said Christopher Bettinger of Carnegie Mellon University. He works on biodegradable electronics but was not involved in the study.
Doctors already use implants that dispense drugs or provide electrical stimulation, but they don't dissolve. The new work is aimed at making devices that do their jobs as long as needed and then just dissolved, without need for surgical removal or risk of long-term side effects.
In the experiment, the devices ? which look like tiny computer chips ? were designed to generate heat, a potential strategy for fighting infection after surgery by killing germs, said John Rogers of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, an author of the study.
The devices worked in the mice for more than a week, until their silk coatings dissolved enough for bodily fluids to erode key parts of the devices, he said. After three weeks, the tiny gadgets had basically disappeared.
Someday for people, similar devices might be programmed to monitor the body and release drugs accordingly, or produce electric current to accelerate bone healing, Rogers said.
The researchers used the protective cocoon envelope because silk can be processed to stay intact for varying periods of time ? from seconds to weeks and potentially for years, he said. The device's circuitry itself was built from other materials that degrade in the body, such as magnesium and silicon.
The federally funded research was reported online in the journal Science.
Apart from medicine, the technology offers a way to cut down on electronic waste, or E-waste, if portable consumer devices could be made with decomposing components, the researchers wrote.
And there are other potential uses, too Rogers suggested. For example, such devices could be scattered near a chemical spill to monitor things like chemical concentrations without any need to retrieve them later.

Would you donate a kidney for cash?
In a new survey from Canada, 45 percent of people said that money is an acceptable incentive for organ donations from living donors, while 70 percent of survey respondents said that cash is an acceptable enticement for people to donate their organs after death.
"We do need to consider a system where we compensate people for their giving," said study researcher Dr. Braden Manns, professor of nephrology at the University of Calgary in Canada.
The idea of paying organ donors is not new. "We have more patients on dialysis, but we don't have more donors; so we're looking at other ways to motivate people to donate," Manns said.
However, while the survey found that many people's think cash incentives are acceptable, people's answers may be different than their opinions when faced with the grueling realities of donations.
"Surveys are quick measures of people's feelings that may be relatively uninformed," said Peter H. Schwartz, a faculty investigator at the Indiana University Center for Bioethics who had no role in the new study.
Cash for kidneys?
In North America, "opt-in" organ donation programs are common; people must actively to choose to donate. In Europe, it's more common for countries to have "opt-out" programs, in which people become organ donors unless they expressely state they wish otherwise.
"Every option raises at least some concerns," Schwartz said. In opt-in programs, relatives can still control whether a person's organs are actually donated after their death. "We need to do better at encouraging organ donations," he said.
While selling organs is illegal, financial incentives are common in Canada and the U.S; these typically take the form of reimbursements from foundations for funeral expenses for deceased donors, and tax breaks from the government on expenses incurred during recovery for living donors, according to policy researchers.
Manns and colleagues looked at whether people would find it acceptable for additional incentives, to compensate living donors for the time and inconvenience involved in having surgery.
They conducted their web-based survey in October 2011, and included 2,004 people in the general public ? a nationally representative sample from Canada ? along with 339 health professionals and 268 people affected by kidney disease.
Results showed that health care workers were least likely to support the idea of financial incentives for donors. Just 14 percent said it was a good idea, whereas 45 percent of the general public said so.
The kidney disease patients fell in the middle range, with 27 percent saying paying for organs should be allowed.
"Very often, the reason health professionals give for their opposition to financial incentives is that the public would find them to be objectionable, but as this study and others suggest, the greatest source of concern is the health professionals themselves," said Robert Truog, director of clinical ethics at Harvard Medical School.
Though health care professionals may find financial incentives unpalatable, a regulated system would work, Truog said.
What kind of system would work?
One problem with offering financial incentives is that the organ transplant communitiy is deeply committed to the view that organs are always "gifts," and never "commodities." This view has always been problematic, but has become increasingly so as the shortage of organs has become more pronounced, and in the face of compelling arguments for the ethical use of financial incentives," Truog said.
Public support for financial incentives does not mean that they would work to increase organ transplants, he said.
"It's the physicians who actually perform the transplants; if they're not behind (financial incentives), they're not going to take part in it," George Annas, a bioethicist at Boston University School of Public Health, told MyHealthNewsDaily.
"People need to stop looking at just the supply side, but look at the demand side," Annas said, including preventative and less invasive medical interventions along with figuring out the underlying causes of the diseases.
"People can't let go of the notion of this as a cash-and-carry type of business," he said.
The survey results are detailed today (Sept. 27) in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

Q: I am near the Humble, Texas area and am seeking a real estate agent who is interested in developing a professional long term relationship and who is familiar with Houston, and the surrounding areas (preferably northern Houston to include areas from Kingwood to Katy). I will be initially investing in SFR, and have my own leads. Agent will query MLS in accordance with my instructions, and provide information as necessary. I will not be buying exclusively from the MLS but will require comps for my own leads. I may sell or lease as my exit strategy dictates on each individual deal. I will also be purchasing from HUD so NAID is paramount. I will be referring to the agent numerous leads that I get that do not satisfy my own investment criteria. Newly licensed agents are welcome, if you are willing and able to learn quickly. Time is of the essence and the agent will need to be able to provide information timely and efficiently. I have my own closing/escrow/title company and they handle most of my paperwork. Thank you for your consideration.

The issue:
Frightening episodes of gun violence have been splayed across front pages with alarming frequency this campaign season: the movie theater killings in Colorado, the Sikh temple shootings in Wisconsin, the gun battle outside the Empire State Building, and more. Guns are used in two-thirds of homicides, according to the FBI. But the murder rate is less than half what it was two decades ago.
___
Where they stand:
Neither President Barack Obama nor Republican Mitt Romney has had much to say about guns during the campaign, except when prodded by high-profile events such as the Colorado shootings. Obama hasn't pushed gun control measures as president, and Romney says he doesn't think the nation needs new gun laws. Both style themselves as defenders of the Second Amendment right to bear arms.
Obama has signed laws letting people carry concealed weapons in national parks and in checked bags on Amtrak trains. He's voiced support for a renewed ban on assault-type weapons but hasn't tried to get that done. He blames Congress for opposing such measures.
Romney suggested after the Colorado shootings that he favors tougher enforcement of existing gun laws. He said he doubts whether new laws would help. The key, he said, is to identify deranged or distressed people and then "keep them from carrying out terrible acts." It's a big shift in tone from his days as Massachusetts governor, when he vowed to protect the state's "tough gun laws" and signed a ban on assault weapons.
___
Why it matters:
Don't expect gun control to be high on the presidential agenda no matter who wins in November. Although Obama is more open to gun ownership restrictions than Romney, neither seems inclined to push it. That's not to say it makes no difference who gets elected when it comes to gun control. Supreme Court appointments could make a big difference.
But it has faded as a political issue. Crime just isn't the public concern it was years ago. And it's getting harder to make the argument that stricter gun laws are needed when violent crime has been decreasing without them.
Although high-profile shootings inevitably stir up talk about tighter gun controls, over time the public has shifted in favor of the right to own guns and away from increased limitations on gun ownership.
In 1990, 78 percent of Americans said laws covering the sale of firearms should be stricter, and 19 percent said they should remain the same or be loosened, according to a Gallup poll. By the fall of 2004, support for tougher laws had dropped to 54 percent. In last year's sounding, 43 percent said they should be stricter, and 55 percent said they should stay the same or be made more lenient.
Still, odds are good that the next president will have a chance to fill at least one Supreme Court seat, and the current court is narrowly divided on gun-control questions. In a 5-4 vote two years ago, for example, the court held that Americans have the right to own a gun for self-defense anywhere they live, expanding the conservative court's embrace of gun rights. The court left unresolved questions about what kinds of gun-control laws fit comfortably with the Second Amendment.
An Obama appointee could be expected to be friendlier to gun controls than would a Romney nominee.
Obama could decide to push for an assault weapons ban in a second term, when he wouldn't have to worry about re-election repercussions. But it still would be unlikely to advance through a House that is expected to remain firmly in Republican hands.

I first learned about cards as a young child in the 1950s, because my Dad and my Uncle W--- were inveterate players. And on holiday - in the chalet say - the parents would all play Whist or similar games. Mum wasn't very good; but she knew enough to play a decent game; and an ability to take part in a game of cards was definitely part of one's social repertoire, as much as knowing how to dance, or how to hold a cigarette as done in the movies (which we called 'the pictures'). Cards might bore you rigid, but nevertheless it was something you had to be prepared to join in with. People who refused to take part in a game were thought odd and awkward. Like making too much of a fuss about not watching a well-loved TV programme in the days when people really did sit enthralled by I Love Lucy, and The Phil Silvers Show (that is, Sergeant Bilko), and The Flintstones, and The Black and White Minstrel Show.
There were many, many card games to play, full of interest, and the ones suitable for children, like Snap, were always lots of fun. I staunchly maintain that I didn't have a satisfactory childhood - you can easily guess why in retrospect - but I must admit that family card games were something I always enjoyed, whatever the company. I was never very good at them, but I was better than Mum was, and it was always a pleasure, and a delicious taste of grownupness, to play Solo Whist with Dad and Uncle W---. They were both gentle, good-tempered men, who studied the game and were good at it. When they won, they'd comment on their very good luck (not their skill); and when they lost, they did so with no more than a rueful smile. It was a world of laughing and chuckling, of winks and twinkling eyes, without strife and inquests or any suggestion of bad feeling.
If I ever thought about it, I saw a game of cards as a ritual in which the rules of the game overrode any personal feelings, a ritual that made people friends, not enemies. I associated my childhood card games with enduring stability and the best of family life.
But then I never took part in cut-throat backroom games for money, never felt the motification of being cheated, and of being afraid to challenge the perpetrators. In the course of my job, I once investigated a London bookmaker who had been cashiered from the RAF for gambling. I was able to prove that he was now taking a percentage off the Revenue. We agreed on that percentage, and settled on that basis, after a cross and contentious interview at which I felt not only soiled by the man himself, but by his equally shysterish accountant. My Revenue experience, whether it was the girl early on who was a croupier on a cruise ship, or the dentist much later who claimed to make a large income from private games of backgammon, all made me associate gambling with sleaze and moral corruption.
I'm sorry to say that. After all, I used to like playing Pontoon for matchsticks when young. I thrilled to the glamorous descriptions of casino gambling, and cards with M at Blades, in the James Bond books, especially Casino Royale (Baccarat, against Le Chiffre) and Moonraker (Bridge, against Hugo Drax).
But during my teens I read Scarne's Complete Guide to Gambling - which I still possess. This was a pre-computer age treatise, on all kinds of gambling from poker to horse-racing; all about craps, blackjack, roulette and other casino games; all about sweepstakes and the numbers game; all about one-armed bandits, all about fairground rackets; with a section on how to cheat. Fascinating stuff. I absorbed it. It was one area in which I felt well-informed as I grew up, and apart from some drunken games of three-card brag with friends after a take-away chinese late at night during the mid-1970s, with nothing but pennies at stake, I kept well away from gambling. The 'glamour' entirely faded when confronted (in my Revenue career, though thankfully not as a steady diet) with real people who did it for real money in real life, and cheated, and then lied about their winnings (or losses) to my face. Even if they could produce scorecards and silver cups. Even if they could claim to be close friends of John Aspinall. Ugh. Or the pathetic Kebab House owner who concealed ?300 a week of his takings so that he could blow it on gambling, eventually confessing this in tears to a colleague. The tears didn't signal an end. He didn't stop placing bets so that he could pay his tax arrears instead. Gambling was in his soul.
To this day, I feel disinclined to take part in the National Lottery. No Thunderball for me. You don't see me at the bingo club either. Nor do I ever fancy Camira Flash - that's The Duke's dog, innit - or want to put twenty-five knicker on Yellow Printer, the dog that broke the record at White City last week. I don't even have a flutter on the Grand National. My prejudice is deep. I'm as unlikely to visit the betting shop as shoot cocaine.
All this is a far cry from the innocent joys of family cardplaying! All my life I have distinguished between card playing in that way, and 'serious' card playing - Bridge, mainly - at clubs. Or the racy gambling games like poker, which are now relentlessly pushed at punters, and which for a certain type of young man must be as dangerously addictive as fast red sports cars, and easy sex with young blonde girls in hotpants and exaggerated manga bodies. What a shame that for many people, especially young people, 'cards' are associated only with Texas Hold 'Em, and hammering the credit card balance at midnight in front of the computer.
Elsewhere on this blog I've described how I used to play cards with Dad. And how for three years after he died, I missed not playing our favourite games with him. Buying my Sony tablet last April has changed that. I can now have a game with an 'artificial intelligence'. This is what I have installed. (These are games for an Android device. You'd have different versions for an iPad)
BTO Cribbage by Buck The Odds, LLC (?1.28)
Ecart? by GoodSoft (free)
Piquet by GoodSoft (free)
Klondike Solitaire by Softick Ltd (free)
As you can see, these were mostly free. I'm sure you are familiar with Cribbage, and of course Solitaire. Ecart? was an Edwardian casino game, a bit like Whist with trumps but played with only five cards, in which you discard again and again to improve the hand before someone calls a halt and you play with what you've got. Piquet is a very old but highly skilful game, again on the lines of Whist, with a discarding stage, scores for sets and sequences, and a playout at No Trump. There is facsimile onscreen running commentary, because in the real game you speak as you play. In the example below, I'm 'Y' for 'Younger Hand' (i.e. the dealer). It's the fifth of six deals, and I've got a commanding lead already, but then I get this cracker of a hand. I think I won with over 300 points clocked up (the computer does the arithmetic):
These are pretty good card games if you can seldom play anyone in real life. Computerisation makes them unnaturally slick, but the same fine judgements on the odds can be made, and you can play your hunches, just as in the real-life version. Softick's classy version of Solitaire is an absolute winner in my view. It has so many nice touches. Even a 'realistic' noise as you turn up cards, or send them onto different piles. And you can put the photo of your choice on the back of each card. I use Mr Punch, as in this photo I took in 2010:
The 'mental exercise' aspect is important. You can buy little gadgets that let you play Sudoku - pardon me, while I yawn and fall over at the thought of Sudoku - as bad as crosswords - anywhere, anytime, to keep your decrepid brain from seizing up. But I prefer Solitaire, or, for a bit more excitement and emotional expression, one of my other card games. Same function.
And is my brain in better shape? Or am I still going gaga? Reader, you must make up your own mind.
And if anyone recognises where the references to Yellow Printer, or Camira Flash (The Duke's dog, innit) come from, I will be mightily impressed with their Great Knowledge.

AUGUSTA, Maine ? Gov. Paul LePage has appointed Kevin Healey, currently vice president of human resources at St. Mary?s Health System in Lewiston, as vice chairman of the State Workforce Investment Board.
Healey has been a member of the workforce investment board since LePage created it last December, two months after discovering that in recent years the four regional workforce development boards had used roughly 20 percent of federal workforce training funds for job training, while the rest was used for administration and overhead. Those four regional workforce boards were eliminated and the new State Workforce Investment Board officially replaced the Maine Jobs Council last month, according to the jobs council?s website.
When asked what his priority would be in his new role, Healey said it was to make sure federal money flowing into Maine for workforce training is used effectively.
?I want to see those dollars used as efficiently as possible so more people have the skills they need to get a job,? he said. ?Not to say it hasn?t been done in the past, but I think we can do it in a more targeted and more collaborative manner.?
The workforce investment board?s new strategic plan involves collaborating with the state?s chambers of commerce to better understand the workforce needs of businesses.
The board consists of 35 members from the business, economic development and education fields, as well as a few legislators, according to the state website. It is tasked with advising the administration and Legislature on workforce development issues, as well as managing the effort to improve Maine?s workforce development system so it is able to meet the future needs of Maine employers.
In his current position at St. Mary?s, Healey is responsible for all aspects of human resources management for both the health system and St. Joseph hospital. Previously, he served as a human resources division director at Unum in Portland and as the executive director of the Unum Foundation.
Healey?s ?background in human resources and management will serve the board and Mainers well,? Fred Webber, chairman of the workforce investment board, said in a statement.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? A University of Arkansas physicist and his colleagues have examined the lower limits of novel materials called complex oxides and discovered that unlike conventional semiconductors the materials not only conduct electricity, but also develop unusual magnetic properties.
Jak Chakhalian, Jian Liu, Derek Meyers and Benjamin Gray of the University of Arkansas and John W. Freeland and Phillip Ryan of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory present their ideas in Physical Review Letters.
"Contrary to what we have today in modern microelectronics devices based on silicon, here in a single quantum well, which is just four nanometers thick, we now have several functionalities in one device layer," said Chakhalian, professor of physics and holder of the Charles and Clydene Scharlau Chair in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. "Engineers can use this class of material to devise new multifunctional devices based on the electrons' spin."
The microelectronic materials -- semiconductors -- used in today's computers, have almost reached the lower limitation for size and functionality. Computers run on several semiconducting devices layered together in the very smallest of spaces, known as quantum wells, where nanoscale layers of a semiconducting material are sandwiched between two nanoscale layers of a non-conducting material. However, the researchers found that by using complex oxides with correlated electrons confined to quantum well geometry, they added a new dimension to the mix.
The new structure is based on the concept of correlated charge carriers, like those found in rust, or iron oxide. In rust, if one electron does something, all of the other electrons "know" about it. This phenomenon, called correlated electrons, does not exist in silicon-based materials that run today's computers, televisions, complex medical equipment, power cell phones and keep the electricity on in homes.
"In normal materials used today, electrons don't care about the movement of one another," Chakhalian said. "We can predict their properties almost on the 'back of an envelope' with the help of powerful computers." However, with correlated materials, the calculations for the movement of one electron involve tracking the interactions with billions of electrons, and this is beyond modern theory capabilities.
Chakhalian and his colleagues went down to four atomic layers of a correlated complex oxide material based on nickel and sandwiched it in between two layers of non-conducting oxide material based on aluminum. Unlike the semiconducting materials, the complex oxide structure revealed the unexpected presence of both electronic and magnetic properties.
These multiple properties in a single material may allow the semiconductor industry to push the limits of current conventional computers and develop multiple functions for a single device, possibly allowing everyday electronics to become smaller and faster than they are today.
Chakhalian is a professor in the Institute for Nanoscience and Engineering.

What happens if a power outage or other disaster takes an entire financial district offline? Equinix rolled out its answer to that question today in Slough, England, where it opened new data center space designed specifically for displaced financial traders.
Equinix (EQIX) has launched the third phase of its London LD5 International Business Exchange (IBX) data center, which adds 4,000 square meters (about 43,000 square feet) of data center space with capacity for 1,400 cabinets. The expansion also features 130 dedicated Business Continuity Trading desks, providing emergency trading capabilities for financial services firms. Many disaster recovery providers supply desk space for workers, but LD5 offers specialized trading desks and workstations equipped with multiple monitors, specialized trading phones with voice recording, and numerous market data feeds.
The Equinix facilities in Slough are close enough for London-based trading staff to access quickly, but located outside the metropolitan area to comply with regulatory guidelines for disaster recovery and continuity of operations. The proximity of the LD4 and LD5 data centers to a transatlantic network cable landing station also provides a very fast connection between London and North American financial markets like New York and Chicago, which reduces trading latency. Equinix has opened similar facilities in Hong Kong, Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf, Milan, New York and Sao Paulo.
?Financial market participants and service providers are key growth drivers currently, and they are experiencing growing regulatory pressure to put business continuity capacity in place,? said Russell Poole, managing director, Equinix UK. ?This is why our latest build-out features are what we believe is the most comprehensive and best-connected business continuity offering in the London market today.?
Once the fourth and final phase of the build-out is completed, LD5 will provide 16,000 square meters (172,000 square feet) of customer space, with capacity for 5,600 cabinets in total. The LD4/LD5 facilities are located on the same campus and connected by more than 1,000 diverse dark fiber links into Central London with global access to more than 900 network providers.

Falcon for Twitter (beta) is a widget that aims to let you do all your everyday Twitter stuff directly from your homescreen, and I?m not just talking about reading and writing tweets. This clever little widget does so much more.
I know this is the traditional time of year to squabble about which operating system is best, and as an owner of Android and iOS devices I would like to sit on the fence on that one for now, however, I do beleive that one of the stand out features of Android is the ability to run widgets directly from your homescreen. The problem is that very few apps take full advantage of its capabilities.
This is where the clever developers who?ve come up with Falcon for Twitter have succeeded where so many others have failed.
Firstly, this is a beta version. I don?t normally like to recommend betas, as you have to remember that you?re using a test release that comes with the caveat that it may stop functioning correctly. However, I?ve been using Falcon for the past couple of months and I?ve had no problems with stability. In fact, every update has just brought more and more functionality, to the point where I just couldn?t wait any longer to sing its praises.
When you first install Falcon you get a few screens explaining exactly what you get. Once run you have to add the widget before doing anything else, because it?s not an app as such.
Once added and you?ve authenticated with Twitter you?re presented with a stylish black rectangular widget (theme is changeable) that soon populates with your Twitter timeline. Across the top are several controls:
a falcon head ? takes you to your full Twitter app, if installed (although I very rarely feel the need)
a numerical indicator ? how many tweets you have
a refresh button
a toggle to take you between your timeline and your mentions
a new tweet button
a menu button ? gives you access to your Twitter profile, direct messages, favourites, search and settings
The timeline is scrollable by swiping with your finger. Once a tweet is tapped the stand out features become obvious: the display changes, showing the tweet at the top and an area for displaying the contents of any links within it.
For example, if the tweet contains a link to a photo or video it will automatically load them high resolution. Not only that though, if there?s a link then it will load the web page within the widget ? no browser required. Want to navigate awy from that page? No problem, the widget continues to act like a browser.
Also within this window you will see any conversation history and get the ability to reply, retweet, favourite, and share the tweet.
All of this is happening without leaving your homescreen, so on a tablet you can still have your email and or?music widgets, for example, visable at the same time,?making good use of Android?s true multitasking capabilities.
(click thumbnails to see screenshots. Thanks to Ross for the loan of his grub!)
Of course, with any widget there are going to be limitations. For example, there is no access to trends or some of the more advanced features of Twitter, and, being a beta there are quite a few updates to download, but nothing that bothers me at all. In fact, I can?t remember the last time I launched my full Twitter client!
I?ve just re-read my review and I?ve realised that this may sound like some sort of advert, but best of all, Falcon is free and without adverts, so there?s no need for either party to be biased. I can assure you that this review is so positive because this widget is so good, and it just seems to keep getting better!
Falcon for Twitter beta is available in the Google play store, but please note that it?s for devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and above.
I work in IT and marketing, I spend my spare money on smartphones and tablets. My friends have grown weary of my fascination with mobile technology, so I write about it in the hope that someone out there is as obsessed as me? and it seems there is. Welcome to my world.

Terms dependence and addiction are linked to self-destructive behavior, which in a way, marked an impoverished self-insight.
It is a fact that human beings are born defenseless, needing others to achieve development.
Human beings need to depend on others
The animals born in conditions where the presence is essential for the mother. This dependence continues for the first few months of life, then the puppy achieved sustained without major difficulties. In humans, this period lasts for much of the journey vital as a human baby a year would fail to survive on their own. In this condition, the human Puppy necessarily establishes links with other dependents, since otherwise not be able to survive. They are the early links that structure to be impressing your personality and how you act.
The basic fears and links
In turn, that man can be labeled is crossed by the presence of two basic fears, Pichon Riviera, ?attachment theory? refers to the fear of losing the one hand and fear of another attack, with fears that being coexist throughout life. With each issue, limit to situations that generate anxiety and fears and anxieties will these handle such situations every man according to his personality structure, which is particular and unique in each case.
Consumption and addiction
The current trend in society is geared to consumption , an issue not less, since the human awakens the need to eat, behavior that can become dangerous because somehow enabled, replace dependence that has accompanied it since its conception, the need to consume. In the consumer need, which can in many cases be linked to reduce anxiety, addiction is displayed.
Addiction is a form of quiet anguish, and everyone in this society resolves to solve it, not as you want but as you can, from their particular personality structure, unconsciously choose behaviors to reduce anxiety and distress about living in the world. The above does not enable addiction as successful exit, but from somewhere explaining one of the causes of addiction, the goal is, somehow mark the need to strengthen the self-esteem to avoid dependency objects that are ultimately harmful.
On the other hand, can be labeled that addictive behavior is not only drugs but in wide variety of situations ranging from the compulsion to buy up the need to be at risk for increased adrenaline, through compulsion to play , drink, food, technology, gender and more. In all cases, the need for professional help would enable both self-esteem and strengthen emotional ties, initiating a process of reconstruction is where the emotional support that enable a vision of himself targeting a healthy life plan.
