Meditation May Help Fight Loneliness, Study Says - - Health.com

    By Maureen Salamon
    HealthDay Reporter

FRIDAY, Aug. 24 (HealthDay News) ? A simple form of meditation can help stave off feelings of loneliness and may cut the body?s inflammatory response ? which can trigger serious illness ? to distressing emotions, a small new study suggests.

Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh found that older adults who participated in an eight-week program of mindfulness-based stress reduction ? which attunes the mind to the present and avoids dwelling on the past or projecting into the future ? reported a reduced sense of loneliness on an established ratings scale. Blood tests also indicated a significant decrease in the expression of inflammation-related genes.

?I think meditation training can help [people] develop a new relationship to feelings of stress,? said study co-author J. David Creswell, director of the Health and Human Performance Laboratory at Carnegie Mellon. ?It puts a brake on this process ? and turns down the chronically stressed state people may be in, thereby turning down the pro-inflammatory cascade. I think it may be targeting the stress component of loneliness such that it doesn?t blow itself out of proportion.?

The study appeared online recently in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity.

Previous research has linked feeling lonely to a heightened risk of heart disease, Alzheimer?s, depression and premature death, and higher levels of inflammation in the body may play a role. The study authors said the new research was the first to show that a psychological intervention that decreases loneliness also cut pro-inflammatory gene expression.

Forty adults (mostly women) between the ages of 55 and 85 were randomly assigned to either a mindfulness meditation group or a control group that didn?t meditate. At the beginning and end of the two-month study, all participants were assessed for their feelings of loneliness and blood levels of gene expression for inflammation markers.

The meditation group participated in weekly two-hour group sessions, a daylong retreat later in the study and 30 minutes of daily home mindfulness practice. Group sessions consisted of an instructor leading participants in guided mindfulness meditation exercises, yoga and stretching, and discussions designed to foster awareness of participants? moment-to-moment experiences.

The research provided additional clues as to how this form of meditation may affect the health of lonely older adults, the study authors said, although it did not assess whether the reduction in pro-inflammatory gene expression translated into meaningful differences on disease outcomes.

?It didn?t measure inflammation directly and didn?t really tell you whether their bodies are producing any more or less inflammation,? said Dr. Jeremy Koppel, a geriatric psychiatrist and research scientist at Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks, N.Y., and the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset, N.Y. But, ?the study is suggestive of a very interesting and novel approach to the problem of loneliness ? and broadens the potential benefit to other diseases of late life.?

Montana man injured by runaway cow

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) ? A construction worker who tried to help Billings police corral a runaway cow earlier this week said the bovine charged at him "like a bull at a rodeo" and threw him into the air.

Morgan Logan of Acton suffered broken bones in his lower leg and had sore ribs after his encounter with the 1,200-pound black Angus cow after it escaped from the Public Auction Yards on Tuesday afternoon, The Billings Gazette (http://bit.ly/MOC8uM) reported.

Logan, 52, said he was driving a gravel truck when he saw the police chasing the animal and decided to try to help.

"I've been around livestock my whole life, so at first sight I thought it was pretty funny seeing cops chase a cow down the street," said Logan. "But she was like a bull at a rodeo."

The cow charged at him from under a tree, said Logan, who was released from the hospital Wednesday.

"I guess I saw her too late because the next thing I knew I was in the air," Logan said. "I had no fence to climb ? she caught me right in the open."

Billings police Lt. Kevin Iffland said by the time Logan encountered the cow it had already tipped over a bicyclist, charged pedestrians and nearly jumped over a police vehicle.

"It's not like we are out in the pasture," Iffland said Wednesday. "This was a totally different scenario of asphalt and a lot of traffic. We are not equipped to wrangle large animals in a city environment."

A police marksman shot the cow in the heart with a rifle about two hours after it escaped.

"There were a lot of factors that were considered that went into this as well ? backgrounds and angles," Iffland said, "and whether to shoot in the head or heart. We were certainly concerned with the most humane way and the safest way."

Auction yard manager Bob Cook said the consigned cow was "on the fight" as they tried to unload it at about 3 p.m. Tuesday and tried to run back into the trailer before escaping.

"I guess she saw just enough daylight through the wing doors and crashed through them," he said. "She was mad when she came off the truck and those kinds of cows can certainly be dangerous."

Jeramie Burg, 35, of Billings, was leaving the library when he first spotted the rampaging cow.

"The way the cow was snarling and scuffing, at first I thought it was a bull without horns," Burg said. "It was total chaos. At one point, I saw the cow tip over a man who was on a bicycle in South Park."

Cook said the cow's carcass was taken to the city landfill.

I have just been diagnosed with prostate cancer, now what?

    By Ronald Ennis, MD

You?ve been diagnosed with prostate cancer. There is so much information out there, but how do you sort through it? The first thing is to take a deep breath. The vast majority of people with prostate cancer do not need treatment, and if they do, they are cured.

You will have choices to make and your doctor can help you sort through them.? There are three main prostate cancer treatment options most men need to consider:

Surveillance, also known as watchful waiting
Radiation treatments, external beam types or implanted types
    Surgery

There are also three?prostate cancer?treatment issues to consider:

    Curing the cancer
The possibility of the treatment causing incontinence, which means that urine can leak involuntarily
The possibility that treatment may cause impotence or sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction

To help you sort through these options and issues you should:

    1. Make an appointment to see two types of doctors?a urologist and a radiation oncologist. You should try to find a urologist and radiation oncologist who specialize in prostate cancer.

    2. When you meet with each doctor you should:

Ask about the pros and cons of each prostate cancer?treatment option.

Ask each doctor about his or her results treating your kind of prostate cancer.

    Take notes during the meetings.

Leave each appointment feeling like the doctors truly explained each option and why each is or is not a good choice for you, given the treatment issues.

    3. After meeting with the doctors, you should:

Not feel pressured into a choice.

Be satisfied after either appointment that you have a good understanding of how your case is affected by each prostate cancer?treatment option and each treatment issue.

Seek second opinions from each specialty if you are still unsatisfied or unclear. Limit your search to just that?second opinions. Seeing more and more specialists does not necessarily lead to a better prostate cancer treatment?decision.

Choose the option that seems best for you.

Be efficient and not let this process drag on. Generally, a month or so should be enough time to work through your decision.

Find out more about prostate cancer and the treatment options available from the Continuum Cancer Centers of New York.

Choosing Your Autoresponder Software | Traffic Generation Systems

    How to Index Backlinks

Unique Ways To Utilize Mobile Marketing For Business Zettabytes
It can be a somewhat difficult and time consuming task to find the right autoresponder. There are a lot of choices available on the Internet, each one ranging in price and features. Before you decide to purchase your own autoresponder, you should first think about your budget as well as your requirements. This way, you?ll know what you want and how much you are willing to spend.

First, you?ll need to decide the features you want. Next, you?ll need to take a look at some of the different types of autoresponders available on the market. You?ll also need to decide which type is right for you, and which brand name you think would work the best. You can answer these questions by comparing different brands, prices, features, and licensing restrictions.

For a business, autoresponders can be great. As most of us already know, autoresponders are programs that will send out an automated response via email to a specified address. In most cases, the response you get back from an email autoresponder is short and sweet, normally letting you know that someone is on vacation, away from their computer, or that they have received your message.

The only real problem to autoresponders is the fact that they will replay to any email that they receive. If you are subscribed to a mailing list and used your autoresponder address to sign up, it can easily create a problem. Anytime someone sends you an email to your responder address it will send an automated reply. It can also lack important features that you need to follow up on your clients or subscribers as well.

For the Internet marketing guru, there are sequential autoresponders. These types of autoresponders are designed to collect different email addresses then send out a variety of pre determined messages through email to subscribers that you have on your list. If you have a sequential autoresponder and use it correctly, it can help you bring back more visitors. It can be a very handy tool to have around, especially if you work with a lot of clients. It can help you keep track of subscribers, as well as keep them informed about what is going on with your business.

All across the Internet there are many types of autoresponders. They range from web based programs to scripts or programs that run through your computer or personal server. An autoresponder will be a major part of your online business, which is why you should always put forth the time and effort to find the best one for your money. If you put the proper research and time into finding your ideal autoresponder, you?ll save yourself a lot of time and headache in the long run.

Basically, there are three main types of autoresponders that you can choose from ? remote hosted, locally hosted, and desktop hosted. Remote hosted are hosted on someone else?s server or website. Locally hosted will allow you to work programs for your own web server. Desktop programs on the other hand, will allow you to work from your own computer. Most people choose to go with locally hosted, as it makes things a lot easier.

Before you decide on which type of autoresponder to purchase, you should make sure that you understand what each type will offer you. There are a variety of autoresponders to choose from, meaning that some may not offer what you need. You can always research each type, and then compare prices and features. This way, you?ll know which type of autoresponder will work the best for your needs as well as your business.

High school valedictorian denied diploma over graduation speech

    Kaitlin Nootbaar (KFOR)

An Oklahoma high school valedictorian who used the word "hell" in her graduation speech in May has yet to receive her diploma.

Kaitlin Nootbaar graduated from Prague High School with a 4.0 grad point average, her father, David Nootbaar, told KFOR-TV. But school administrators told him that Kaitlin would have to submit a written apology in order to get her diploma.

"We went to the office and asked for the diploma and the principal said, 'Your diploma is right here but you're not getting it. Close the door, we have a problem,'" David Nootbaar told the network.

"She worked so hard to stay at the top of her class," he said. "This is not right."

In her speech--inspired by a similar address in "Eclipse: The Twilight Saga"--Kaitlin recounted how annoying it is to be constantly asked what she wants to do as graduation approached. "How the hell do I know?" she said, according to her father. "I've changed my mind so many times."

In the version she submitted to the school for approval, "hell" was "heck." But in the version she delivered at graduation, "hell" it was.

The school declined to comment. "This matter is confidential and we cannot publicly say anything about it," Prague superintendent Rick Martin said in a statement to KFOR.

    Salted Caramel Cupcakes at TidyMom.net

There seems to be something running in the blogging water these days, when you consider all the pregnant bellies showing up on blogs, facebook and at events.

Today my friends and I are throwing a surprise virtual shower for Jenny, the creative face behind the Picky Palate a blog full of fun kitchen creations!?? Jenny is a wife and mom of two little boys, with number three expected to arrive in September!? Not only has she been cooking up another picky palate to feed, but Jenny has also just finished her very first cookbook, The Picky Palate Cookbook with Wiley Publishing that will be available October 22nd 2012.? What an exciting year for her!!

We all can?t get together with Jenny in person, but we can all share our well wishes and excitement for her and her family by showering her with our virtual sweets, treats and more!

    Salted Caramel Cupcake recipe TidyMom.net

Earlier last month I visited Sprinkles cupcake shop in New York City with my daughters.? As soon as I opened the door and took in the sweet aroma, I knew I wanted the salted caramel cupcake.? I?ve been dreaming about the wonderful thick, creamy buttery caramel frosting every since, and knew I would need to try and recreate that cupcake at home.? What better time than a virtual baby shower!? I think Jenny would LOVE these as much as we did!

    I started with a Duncan Hines Caramel Cake Mix and doctored it up just a bit.? Still using 3 eggs like the box calls for, but I then? used melted butter instead of oil, and only one cup of liquid, using 1/2 cup Coffee-Mate Caramel Macchiato creamer and 1/2 cup water. {full recipe below}

    Caramel Cupcakes at TidyMom.net

This will yield a nice thick batter, enough for 24 regular size cupcakes and 12 mini cupcakes.

The real magic happens with the frosting!? I used Nestle la lechera dulce de leche caramel to make a caramel cream cheese frosting!? If you can?t get a hold of the Dulce de Leche, I?m sure caramel ice cream topping would work well too.

    Caramel Cupcake recipe at TidyMom.net

With the left over dulce de leche, I drizzled a little over the top of the frosting then a light sprinkling of fleur de sel that I picked up at The Meadow Shop in New York City!? A beautiful and unexpected shop that I fell in love with that specializes in artisan salt and gourmet chocolate and more! A must stop if you ever find your self in NYC?s West Village!

    Salted Caramel Cupcakes at TidyMom.net

I wish I could give you? a scratch and sniff here!? Even sitting on my table 2 days later, you could just smell the creamy, buttery caramel as you walked by.? These were, dare I say, nearly as good as what we had at Sprinkles.? Although, I?m not comparing them side by side, but they were definitely every bit as dreamy as I had envisioned!

Salted Caramel Cupcake recipe at TidyMom.net

There you go! One seriously sensational cupcake! For one seriously sensational blogger and her new baby!

I have to tell you though, my husband wasn?t a fan of the salt, so if you aren?t either, just leave the salt off the top?..but promise me, you will try it on just one!? Be very light, a little fleur de sel goes a long way!

Congrats to your family, Jenny! There are a lot of incredible moments ahead for you.

Porn group: filming to halt during syphilis probe

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A pornography trade group has called for a nationwide filming moratorium while performers are tested for syphilis and Los Angeles County public health officials investigate a possible outbreak of the sexually transmitted disease.

One performer has tested positive, and the performer's sexual partners are being notified, according to Joanne Cachapero, a spokeswoman for the Free Speech Coalition.

The voluntary, temporary moratorium on production is expected to shutter a multi-billion dollar industry "until the risk to performers in the industry has been properly assessed and all performers have been tested," the trade association said in a statement.

On Friday, the Los Angeles County Public Health Department announced an investigation into at least five possible cases of syphilis that were reported last week.

Cachapero said the group is calling on all performers, more than 1,000, to be tested. Because the illness can be difficult to detect, the trade group's medical experts have ordered preventative shots of antibiotics for performers. After performers get the shots, they can go back to work within 10 days, Cachapero said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, syphilis is transmitted through direct contact with syphilis sores, which mainly occur on the external genitals, vagina, anus or inside the rectum. The disease can be transmitted through a variety of sex acts.

A single shot of penicillin can cure a person who has had syphilis for less than a year, according to the CDC. Additional doses are necessary for people who have had the STD for a longer period.

County public health spokeswoman Sarah Kissell acknowledged the investigation Monday but declined an interview seeking details of its scope or an update of its findings.

The porn industry has held self-imposed moratoriums following news of diseased performers before.

In 2011, major porn producers stopped filming for nearly a week after an adult film performer tested positive for HIV, which causes AIDS. The Free Speech Coalition said the case was later determined to have been a false report.

In late 2010, porn actor Derrick Burts was diagnosed as HIV-positive, and his case was confirmed, briefly halting production.

In 2004, at least five performers tested positive for HIV, prompting another brief self-imposed moratorium.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, an advocacy group that has called for the use of condoms in all pornography, said Monday that the industry is incapable of policing itself and protecting its performers.

The group is backing a November ballot measure that will allow Los Angeles county voters to mandate the use of condoms during pornography shoots.

The Free Speech Coalition opposes the measure, saying the industry is a tight-knit community that has been proactive in testing and protecting the welfare of performers.
